NEGATIVE FORM OF THE VERB TO BE
 
Para formar uma oração negativa, apenas colocamos a partícula negativa not depois do verbo to be.
Note as contrações (abreviações) do verbo e a partícula not.
 
Affirmative:  Margarete Magalhães is a famous Brazilian singer.
Negative: Margarete Magalhães is not a famous Brazilian singer.
                  Margarete Magalhães isn't a famous Brazilian singer.
 
Affirmative: "Sob Nova Direção" and "A Diarista" are funny T.V. shows.
Negative: "Sob Nova Direção" and "A Diarista" are not funny T.V. shows.
"Sob Nova Direção" and "A Diarista" aren't funny T.V. shows.
 
Affirmative: Sussuaranas and leopards are canines (dogs).
Negative: Sussuaranas and leopards are not canines (dogs).
Sussuaranas and leopards aren't canines (dogs).
 
O verbo TO BE, na forma negativa, também pode ser conjugado assim:
you are not – you aren’t
he is not – he isn’t
she is not – she isn’t
it is not – it isn’t
we are not – we aren’t
you are not – you aren’t
they are not – they aren’t
Essa forma é chamada abreviada ou contraída. Observe que a primeira pessoa do singular não aparece acima, pois não pode ser conjugada dessa maneira.
Exemplo:
The cheese isn’t delicious.
The cheese is not delicious.
They aren’t in London.
They are not in London.
As duas formas apresentadas são corretas e aceitáveis, porém, a contraída é utilizada na linguagem falada e na linguagem escrita informal ou coloquial.
