Simple Tenses Mixed, Story 1
Happy Mother’s Day
Timmy was seven years old. He saw a big,
red, new bike in the store and he wanted
it! It looked so beautiful. He wanted to
take that bike home and ride it for hours!
Timmy really wanted that bike. He asked
his mother, but she told him to save his
own money to buy it.
Timmy saved every penny. He saved for weeks. He did chores in the house and
saved his allowance. He asked his grandmother for money. He even sold his old
toys to the neighbor’s kids.
One day, Timmy was in school. It was the Friday before Mother’s Day. The
teacher told the students to buy presents for their mothers. Timmy really
wanted to make his mother happy, but he did not have enough money. He
needed all his money for his big, red, new bike!
Now Timmy is at home. He feels confused and he does not know what to do.
He wants that bike, but what about his mother? He wants to make her happy
too. Then suddenly, he has an idea!
The idea is perfect! He will go to the store with all his money (he thinks he will
have enough). He will pay for his mother’s present and wrap it up. Then he will
take it home to her. She will be so happy. She will be so excited. She is not
going to believe her eyes when she sees her present—a big, red, new bike!

Simple Tenses Mixed, Story 2
Help from the Doctor
Roger is 41 years old. He lives in Florida and he works
as a bus driver. He likes to drive around and he likes
to talk with people.
Roger is usually a very healthy man. He almost never
gets sick. Even when his passengers are sick, he stays
strong and healthy. He likes his work, and he needs
the pay, so he takes good care of his body.
But yesterday was different. He got up with a very
sore throat. It seemed that he got sick.
He called his manager to let him know he was sick
and then went to see his doctor.
His doctor was a young, nice man. He smiledat Roger and asked him what
happened.
“I got sick.” Roger said, “I am not going to work like that. I will need to feel
better first.”
“Yes,” the doctor said. “You will need to feel better before you go back to
work. If not, you are going to make the passengers sick too.”
Roger nodded sadly. “Doctor, please tell me what to do. Can you give me some
medicine?”
“Yes, Roger,” the doctor nodded, “I can give you some medicine. You will buy
it, and take it every day, three times a day. Then you will be healthy in one
week.”
“Okay,” Roger said, “and what if I do not take the medicine?”
“In that case,” the doctor said, “you will be healthy in seven days.”

Simple Tenses Mixed, Story 3
The Truth
Taylor and Rebecca are husband
and wife. They are married for five
years now, and they love each other
very much.
Rebecca earns a little more than
Taylor, but other than that, for him
everything is perfect. Taylor laughs
at the wrong jokes, but other than that, for her everything is perfect too.
The good thing about their relationship is that they are always very honest
with each other. They tell the truth even if it is not nice.
One day though, Taylor decided not to tell the truth.
He went to a party at his workplace. Audrey, one of his coworkers, drank too
much and needed help to get home.
“I feel like I am going to fall asleep! Will you please take me home?” she said
and smiled in a silly way.
“Hmm, sure. I will drive you home. I am going to leave in a few minutes. Will
you wait for me at the door?”
Audrey made a silly face and Taylor hoped she understood. On the way, she
fell asleep in the car, and Taylor simply took her home. He did not do anything
wrong. But for some reason, Taylor did not want to tell Rebecca what
happened.
The next day, Rebecca drove the car and Taylor sat beside her. “I am sure she
is going to find out!” he thought. He felt uncomfortable. Then he suddenly
noticed a high-heeled shoe in the back of the car. “Oh no!” he thought. “It
must be Audrey’s!”

Before Rebecca even noticed, Taylor grabbed the shoe and threw it out the
window. She did not see anything. He smiled to himself.
When they arrived, Rebecca looked at him and said, “Honey, did you see my
other shoe?”

Simple Tenses Mixed, Story 4
Peace and Quiet
Sam and his wife have four children, so their house
is always loud. The television is always on. The
radio is always on. The kids always fight. Sam’s
wife always shouts at the kids. It seems that Sam
never has a moment of peace and quiet.
Sam and his family live near the ocean. He always
wishes to hear the waves crash on the beach. But
he always has to do something else.
One day, Sam snapped and told his family, “I am
going to walk to the beach! I am going to take a
beach towel and a cold drink, and I am going to
relax! I will get some peace and quiet!”
When Sam got to the beach, he put his towel on the sand. He lay down on the
towel. He looked at the waves and smiled peacefully. “Now I will have some
peace and quiet!” he thought. Then he heard another family put their things
beside him. They turned on their radio. The kids started to play loudly.
Suddenly a ball hit him. Sam sighed, picked up his towel, and walked farther
down the beach.
He lay down again. He looked at the waves and smiled peacefully. “Now I will
have some peace and quiet!” he thought. Then he heard the loud “beep, beep,
beep” of a bulldozer. He jumped out of the way and walked farther down the
beach.
He lay down again. He looked at the waves and tried to smile. “Will I have
some peace and quiet now?” he asked himself. Then he heard a big group of
people. The people talked and laughed in a bar. They had a party! Then they
started to fight. Sam even heard dishes hit the floor! Sam did not feel so
peaceful.

“Well,” Sam answered, “You are not going to believe this, but I came home to
get some peace and quiet! I am sure I will have more peace and quiet here!”

The Best Baby Name
Kevin and Julia are going to have a baby. They still do
not know if it is going to be a boy or girl, but they
already disagree about baby names.
Kevin wants the name to be common and traditional.
Julia wants the name to be new and original.
Last week they had a long talk about it.
At first, Kevin wanted the name Charles. Julia said no.
Julia wanted the name Spirit. Kevin said no.
Then Kevin suggested the name Margaret. Julia said
no. And Julia suggested the name Journey. Kevin said
no.
They talked. They fought. They did not speak to each other for days. Kevin
spent all his time at work. Julia spent all her time with her girlfriends. Finally,
they had to talk!
“Julia, people often choose new and original names. I think the best names are
traditional names, like Elizabeth and Thomas. Actually, I really like the name
Thomas.”
“Well Kevin, many times people choose common and traditional names. I think
the best names are new and original names, like Polaris or Blaze. Actually, I
really like the name Polaris.”
“You know,” Kevin suddenly said, “I have an idea!”
“Yes?” Julia asked.
“Since I really like the name Thomas and you really like the name Polaris, we
will do it like this: If it is a boy, we will name him Thomas. If it is a girl, we will
name her Polaris. That will be fair!”
