What is reading? What does it involve? What is literacy? How is reading
affected by information and communication technology?
Reading is not only understanding the reading of codes of a certain language,
but also understanding what is exposed. It is also about the reading that we do of
figures, sound stimuli, from facial expressions to the interpretation of text, for that,
reading skills are necessary, which are worked on when the baby sees the mother's
facial expressions of approval or disapproval of something.
Reading involves attention to detail, such as literacy, in which the child
commonly confuses the letters "b" and "d" and "p" and "q" because they are similar if
mirrored. Reading can be a challenge for some students, for example: children who
do not know the pleasure that reading can provide; visually impaired children;
hearing impaired children, etc.
The words can mean different things to different people, the author uses the
example of "ghost" that for each person can vary the constructed thought of what a
ghost is. When I heard the video, I thought about the university bus, the
“fantasminha” and each person can have a different thought according to their
experiences as they have when reading a story or text. She mentions that every
story has the meaning constructed by two people: the reader of the story and the
writer of the story. When connecting the texts to the students' previous experiences,
one can have several approaches to choose from: whole language approaches and
phonetic approaches. In the “Whole Language Approach” you will use the students'
life experiences and the connections between listening, speaking, writing and
reading. It works as follows: the student tells the story orally, sees what he wrote,
listens to the story aloud and finally reads it out loud himself. In the "Phonetic
Approach" the sounds of words are emphasized in the classroom, showing how
these sounds are written can help students discover words and pronounce them.
Literacy in our current society does not only involve writing, it is about what
we are reading to make sense for us and to participate actively in the world we live
in. Literacy is not only about seeing the meaning of what you are reading, but also a
critical literacy in which it involves the student and makes him reflect the value and
usefulness that the text passes. As we live in a society full of information at all times,
students need to be able to decide for themselves what information they will use.
With globalization the way that literacy occurs is changed, as students were born in
the digital age, students can use technology to boost learning. Literacy is not just to
decode the text, but to read it with reference to previous experiences and to critically
analyze the text. Literacy should be taught as a tool to improve all thematic skills.
