MODAL VERBS – EXERCISES
1- Use modal verbs where possible. 
2- You (must)  get up early tomorrow.
3- We (may)  watch the film tonight.
4- He (not / can)  see me yesterday.
5- She (must)  stay at school yesterday afternoon.
6- (may / you)  go to the disco yesterday?
7- He (not / must)  sleep now.
8- He (ought to)  give evidence at the court yesterday.
9- Since he bought the new car he (not / can)  sleep.
2 – Write sentences using the modal with the meaning required in parentheses.
Example: You need to make a phone call. (pedir permissão).
May/ Can I use your phone?
a) It’s very hot and your friend wants to open the window. (dar permissão - afirmativo). 
yes you can open the window
b) You want to know if you friend can help you to move this weekend. (pedir ajuda- interrogativo) could / Can you please help me to move out this weekend?
c) Your friend wants to borrow your pen. (dar permissão- afirmativo) yes you can borrow my pen
d) A German man is on the phone. You don’t speak German but you speak English. (perguntas sobre habilidade). Can you speak English?
e) You can’t open the window. Maybe it’s broken. (dedução – afirmativo) yes it may be broken
f) You are forbidden to eat in the library. (proibição – afirmativo) I must eat outside the library
g) Your homework is difficult and you want help from your friend. (pedido- afirmação) Can you please help me with my homework?
3 – Underline the correct modal according to the meaning required in parentheses.
a) (Can / Must) I have a word with you? (permissão)
b) (Can / Must) you drive well? (habilidade)
c) Studentes (mustn’t / can) leave the room before the end of the test. (proibição)
d) The teacher (mustn’t / could) be on his way. Let’s wait another five minutes. (dedução)
e) I ( could/ must) go now. I’m in a hurry! (obrigação)
f) I (can / must) speak two languages fluently. (habilidade).
4 – Complete the conversation these people are having in a restaurant. Use modals.
Waiter: May I take your order, sir?
Fred: Sorry, but we haven’t decided yet. Elena, what would you like to drink?
Elena: I don’t know. could / can you give me the menu, Fred?
Fred: Sure, here it is. Waiter, could I have a beer?
Waiter: Yes,sir. May I bring the starter?
Elena: Yes, please. Could I smoke here?
Waiter: Sorry, I’m afraid not, madam. Unfortunately, you must go outside to smoke.
Fred: What about you, Carlos? Would you like to share a bottle of wine?
Carlos: No, thanks. Can You order a soda for me?
Fred: Sure.
