UPPER-INTERMEDIATE (B2-C1) VAN LIFE HEAAADERLOGORIGHT The VW Transporter camper van A design classic 1. The Fender Stratocaster guitar, the Coca-Cola bottle and the VW Transporter - what do these things have in common? Each one is a design classic, which means they share certain features. We recognise them immediately, they’ve been around for ages, their design is innovative and functional, they reflect popular culture and they’re even collectable. Let’s take a closer look at the VW Transporter. 2. The VW Transporter was developed just after the Second World War. The story has it that Dutch businessman Ben Pons was visiting the Volkswagen factory when he saw some little motorised trolleys being used to transport items around. He had a Eureka moment, and sketched an idea for a transport vehicle. His clever flat-front design maximised cargo space and was easy to steer around the small crowded streets of European cities. The air-cooled engine was at the back, so the driver had more space and less noise and heat at the front. In addition, each of the four wheels had independent suspension, which produced a smoother ride than other vehicles at the time. 3. The Transporter was designed to be adaptable and the company was soon producing a range of vehicles including delivery vans, buses, pick-ups, ambulances, fire engines and, of course, the well-loved camper van. These vehicles were instantly recognisable by the split frontwindscreen, the two-tone paint and the famous VW logo badge at the front. By 1968, two million vehicles had been sold. 4. The popularity of the Transporter camper van coincided with the development of the counter- cultural movement in the 1960s. The vehicles were affordable to run and could be customised and adapted for many uses including full-time homes. They quickly became iconic of the freedom-loving independent-thinking hippie lifestyle. 5. The Transporter has been through many design changes over the years, but the original vehicles hold a special place in people’s hearts ... and wallets. An original vehicle in excellent condition could be worth almost £100,000 to a collector. 6. Today, all sorts of people from young families to older couples enjoy touring and camping in VW vans. A van is often like a family member — people even give them names! If you don’t want to buy your own, you can rent a vehicle and take off to explore the countryside. Having your own space to cook and sleep makes this type of holiday more Covid secure as well. 7. Volkswagen continues to innovate. Their latest design, the ID Buzz Microbus is an electric self- driving vehicle with wrap-around LED lights, adjustable seats and a removable tablet computer which can control the car. However, the exterior design refers back to the 1950s with its flat front, two-tone paint and prominent VW badge. Do you think it’s possible to feel really free and independent in this type of vehicle? Why/not? 4. These days, some people are living full-time in a motorhome or camper van. Why would someone do this? What problems would they face? FOOOOTERLEFT 4/5Learn without forgetting! Scan the QR at the top of Page 1 to review the lesson flashcards with Expemo. © Linguahouse.com. TEACHER MATERIALS · UPPER-INTERMEDIATE (B2-C1) VAN LIFE HEAAADERLOGORIGHT Transcripts 2. Listening Fern: Now, where’s the coffee truck? Hang on, is that Steve? I think it is. Steve! Steve! Steve: Wow, Fern, what a great surprise! I didn’t know that youwere coming to the festival! Ellen and I come every year. Are you having a good time? Fern: Yeah, the music is great. It’s too bad about the weather though. Steve: Yeah, I know what you mean. That’s why we got a camper van. Fern: Is this yours? The colours are amazing. Did you choose them? Steve: Yeah! Isn’t she beautiful? We call her Ronnie. We wanted her to be easily recognisable, so we could find her, even in the dark. Let me show you around. Fern: Yes, please. Steve: So, we have a little kitchen with a tiny fridge and cooker. And the table is removable, so we only get it out when we want to eat. Fern: That’s so cute! And where do you sleep? Steve: The roof is adjustable. It pops up to make a sleeping area. It’s quite comfy up there. Fern: It’s all so clever! What a great design! Steve: Thanks! I’m quite proud of it, actually. We did it ourselves. The basic van is adaptable, so you can choose the features and layout that you want. Fern: I guess it was expensive. Steve: Yeah, but we’ve always wanted one. We had to save up for a couple of years. It’s true that some classic models of the VW Transporter are very collectable, which pushes the price up. But Ronnie was more affordable than you’d think. Fern: And I guess you’re saving money on your holidays. Steve: Exactly. Fern: I wish I had a camper van! FOOOOTERAPPENDIXRIGHT iLearn without forgetting! TEACHER MATERIALS · UPPER-INTERMEDIATE (B2-C1) VAN LIFE HEAAADERLOGORIGHT Key 1. Warm up 10 mins. Call attention to the pictures and elicit how the vehicles are different: a camper van is a normal-sized van that has been converted for camping and is also shown in the header image, a caravan is pulled behind a car, and a motorhome is a very large vehicle, the size of a bus. Students can discuss the questions in pairs or small groups, and then round up some answers at the end of this stage. Accept any reasonable answers. Tell students that they are going to find out more about camper vans in this lesson. 2. Listening 15 mins. Go over the introduction with the class and the instructions for the first listening activity. Students sometimes have difficulty understanding the difference between false and not given. False means the statement is wrong, according to the information in the listening. Not given means that this information is not included in the listening – it may be true or false, but we can’t tell from what we’ve heard. This type of question is included in some exams, including IELTS. Give students a minute to look through the sentences first. You may need to elicit/explain the meaning of appliances (electrical equipment that is used in the home). Play the recording and then check answers, asking students to justify their ideas with information from the dialogue. For the second listening activity, studentswill recovermore detailed information from the recording. Give students a minute to work in pairs and recall/predict the missing words. Then play the recording again for them to check. They can listen twice if they need to. Then pose the follow-up questions to call attention to the suffix. A good understanding ofword-building contributes to success on exams. Students can work in pairs to think of more examples of each item. They should aim for three examples if possible. Round up some ideas at the end of the stage. Students will encounter these items again in the next activity, in the Reading. Variation: gamify this activity by giving students a set amount of time to brainstorm examples and awarding points for the number of examples they can think of. 1. F - Steve says, "I didn’t know that you were coming to the festival!" 2. T - Ronnie 3. F - two, a fridge and a cooker 4. F - he sleeps in the roof 5. NG 6. T - I wish I had a camper van! Gap-fill: 1. recognisable 2. removable 3. adjustable 4. adaptable 5. collectable 6. affordable Questions: 1. They are adjectives which share the suffix: -able. 2. We add this suffix to a verb to make an adjective that means can be done. FOOOOTERAPPENDIXLEFT iiLearn without forgetting! TEACHER MATERIALS · UPPER-INTERMEDIATE (B2-C1) VAN LIFE HEAAADERLOGORIGHT 3. Reading 15 mins. Before reading the article, ask if students knowanything about theVWTransporter camper van thatwasmentioned in the listening. Then explain the instructions for the first reading activity and give students a few minutes to look over the sentences that they have to complete with 3 words only, from the text. Students can read the text for a few minutes to recover this information and then check answers. The second task supports vocabulary development. Students match the definitions with items in bold from the text. When you go over the answers, check pronunciation as well. These words will be a useful addition to the active vocabulary of students at this level. Working with the whole class, pose the follow-up questions and elicit more examples of words with this ending. Again, a good understanding of word-building contributes to success on exams. 1. a design classic 2. a range of 3. windscreen 4. paint 5. badge 6. In the 1960s 7. control the car Words/phrases: 1. motorised 2. sketched 3. maximised 4. cargo 5. suspension 6. coincided with 7. customised 8. iconic 9. prominent Questions: 1. Maximised, motorised and customised have the same ending: -ised 2. This suffix -ise (or -ised) is added to adjectives and nouns to make verbs (or participle adjectives), with the idea that the verb produces the effect of the noun or adjective. 3. In American English, most, but not all, of these words have an -ize ending. It’s best to check a dictionary if you’re unsure. In British English, -ise is almost always correct. 4. Talking point 10 mins. Give students a few minutes to discuss the questions and then conduct a round-up of answers. Encourage students to give reasons and examples and to present and react to differing points of view. 5. Project 10 mins. Go over the instructions for this design challenge. Students could work alone or in pairs to decide how to adapt a basic van design for their own needs. They can sketch if they want to, or they can just describe their ideas to each other. After a few minutes, they can team up with another classmate or pair to share their ideas. This task could also be extended into a mini-presentation activity for another lesson or assigned as homework. FOOOOTERAPPENDIXRIGHT iiiLearn without forgetting!
