SPEAKING ACTIVITY
by Suzane Silveira
Name: The countries charade game
Time : 5 to 10 minutes
Level: Beginners (a 4th graders class)
Category: Problem-solving/ decision-making
Material required: Flash cards and a white board
Goal: To make the students interact and practice/review the content learned, in a fun and communicative way.
Description: It is a group game or a team challenge and the teacher can use this idea as a warm-up to review the contents learned in the previous lesson or as a fun activity to practice the vocabulary that has just been taught.
STEPS:
1) Prepare flash cards with flags, famous food, types of dance, different greetings and games specific of some countries that the class has studied about. The tecaher can also draw these features on the board. Variation 1: The teacher can use realia, like fruits and objetcs that refer to those countries and nationalities. Variaton 2: if the class is small, the teacher can spread the objects, flags and flash cards around the class, so the students has to look for them.
2) The teacher divides the class into two or more teams.
3) Every component of the teams will answer to questions using the flash cards or drawings for points as a reference. For example: What is a popular food in Brazil? One student of each team has to go to the front and, with the help of the others of his/her group, try to find the flash card with the image of beans and answer it : « A popular food in Brazil is feijoada »
4) The teacher can write the beginning of the required answers on the board to help the students:
A popular food in ___________ is _____________
5) Assessment: Create a vlog or a podcast. Like in a talk show, the teacher will record students’ phrases with curiosities and fun facts about countries, based on the speaking activity that was proposed. The students will be free to choose what they found most relevant or interesting to compilate in the vlog or podcast, then we will post it in our school page or on the parents’ facebook group for them to see their kids’ great work.
