Wi-fi - Wi-fi is an abbreviation of Wireless fidelity.

This interesting usage shows the return of a word that everybody thought had
gone completely out of date – ‘wireless’. I mean, ‘wireless’ was around when
wireless was invented, but it was quickly replaced by ‘radio’. Suddenly it came
back in again with this Internet connection. Nowadays it’s used for all sorts of
applications – TV remotes can be talked about as wireless control, mobile
phones are sometimes referred to as wireless, and so on and so forth. The
opposite of ‘wireless’ is ‘wired’ – that is, using wires to carry the signal as in
cable television. Informally, we can also say that people are ‘wired up’ when
they are fully aware of what is happening in their surroundings.

In China the government rigidly enforces a draconian formula: one couple,
one child. After the birth of an imperfect baby – be it clubfooted, mentally
handicapped or a girl instead of the longed-for healthy male heir – some
Chinese families have chosen to forsake the infant in order to try again.
Declared stillborn as a legal ruse, many of these unwanted infants are then
left in alleyways, railroad stations and bus terminals. If found alive, they
become wards of the country’s state-run orphanages. A Hong Kong source
estimates that one million babies are abandoned each year.

Turning Brown

A four-year-old boy was eating an apple in the back seat of the car, when he
asked, “Daddy, why is my apple turning brown?”
“Because,” his dad explained, “after you ate the skin off, the meat of the apple
came into contact with the air, which caused it to oxidize, thus changing the
molecular structure and turning it into a different color.”
There was a long silence. Then the son asked softly, “Daddy, are you talking
to me?”

Studying to remember

Students want to find the best way to put information into their long-term
memories. They want to be able to remember the information later when they
take a test. What is the best way to learn information so that they can
remember it when they want to? When you study, you should read the whole
lesson first. This gives you the whole picture in which to put ideas. New
information that fits into the whole picture is easier to remember than separate
facts. After you read a whole lesson, the next step is to study the parts. If you
have a lot to study, don’t try to do the whole job at once. To learn the most in
a twohour study session, study different kinds of material.
(Adapted from Time&Space)
