Physical intemperism, also known as physical weathering, refers to the processes that cause the fragmentation or fissuring of rocks. These processes break down the cohesive structure of minerals within rocks, transforming a previously homogeneous surface into a discontinuous rock. Some examples of physical intemperism include freeze-thaw cycles, thermal expansion and contraction, abrasion by wind or water, and the growth of plant roots. These processes contribute to the breakdown and erosion of rocks over time.
