The heart in the developing embryo originates from the mesodermal tissue that forms the cardiogenic plate. The cardiogenic plate is located outside the embryonic disc. The notochord, on the other hand, is a mesodermal tissue that forms the initial longitudinal skeletal axis. It is important to note that the notochord is eventually replaced by vertebrae, but a remnant of it forms part of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral discs.
