What are estomatocytes and in which situations are they present?

Estomatocytes are erythrocytes that present a mouth-like slit in the central region of the cell.
They are mainly present in healthy individuals in the thinnest areas of the blood film and in greater numbers in some hemolytic anemias, alcoholic hepatopathy, and hereditary stomatocytosis.
Stomatocytes can also occur in newborn blood films, during the use of asparaginase, and in the rare Rh null phenotype.
