Petroleum is the product of the compression and heating of organic matter deposited along with sediments.
The organic matter present in the generating rock is called kerogen.
For an accumulation of petroleum to occur, it is necessary that, after the generation process, the oil and/or gas migrate through adjacent layers of rocks until they find a sealing rock and a geological structure that stops their path, under which the oil and/or gas will accumulate in a porous and permeable rock called a reservoir rock.

A origem do petróleo é a compressão e aquecimento de matéria orgânica depositada junto com sedimentos. A matéria orgânica presente na rocha geradora é chamada de querogênio. Para ocorrer uma acumulação de petróleo, é necessário que, após o processo de geração, o óleo e/ou gás migrem através de camadas adjacentes de rochas até encontrar uma rocha selante e uma estrutura geológica que interrompa seu caminho, sob a qual o óleo e/ou gás se acumulará em uma rocha porosa e permeável chamada de rocha reservatório.
