"Colonialism: a love story", Billy-Ray Belcourt.

1. Colonialism broke us, and we¿re still trying to figure out how to love and be broken at the same time.

2. The first time he told me I was beautiful, I thought that he was lying. I thought that beauty was a plot in a story I had been written out of a long time ago.

Billy-Ray Belcourt is an award-winning queer voice in contemporary Canadian literature. Coming from an indigenous background in Canada, his poems deal with a lot of challenges these populations have faced. In the lines above we can notice a common theme in Canadian literature, which is:

place as he, an immigrant, compares life to geographical features

space because he, a Canadian, tries to write his life into a geographical area

nature since he, a queer person, describes weather elements

survival as he, an indigenous person, tries to understand how he is still part of any official (hi)story.

desire since he, an Indian, describes his love for processes of colonialism
