Leishmaniasis is an infectious, but not contagious disease caused by the parasite Leishmania.
This protozoan lives and multiplies inside the phagocytic cells of the host's immune system, called macrophages.
The disease is transmitted by female hematophagous insects, known as sandflies of the genus Lutzomyia.
There are two types of leishmaniasis: cutaneous and visceral.
Cutaneous leishmaniasis is characterized by skin lesions in the most exposed regions of the body, and can also affect the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, and pharynx.
Visceral leishmaniasis or kala-azar is a systemic, highly lethal disease that affects several internal organs, mainly the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.
Leishmania has two forms during the life cycle: amastigote and promastigote.

Leishmaniose é uma doença infecciosa, mas não contagiosa, causada pelo parasita Leishmania. Esse protozoário vive e se multiplica dentro das células fagocitárias do sistema imunológico do hospedeiro, chamadas de macrófagos. A doença é transmitida por insetos hematofágicos femininos, conhecidos como flebotomíneos do gênero Lutzomyia. Existem dois tipos de leishmaniose: cutânea e visceral. A leishmaniose cutânea é caracterizada por lesões na pele nas regiões mais expostas do corpo e também pode afetar as membranas mucosas do nariz, boca e faringe. A leishmaniose visceral ou calazar é uma doença sistêmica altamente letal que afeta vários órgãos internos, principalmente o fígado, o baço e a medula óssea. Leishmania tem duas formas durante o ciclo de vida: amastigota e promastigota.
