Video shot by Michael Mills and a quick edit by Justin Miles. It shows the progress of an attempt to make a Chahakobi Ningyo (tea serving) mechanical wooden doll, that was popular in the 18th century Japan. Few of these early essentially early Japanese robots remain. There are only a few artisans who know the techniques of how to make and maintain the Karakuri remaining in Japan, and Justin was lucky to meet a Karakuri Master named Tamaya Shobei the 9th, one of the more recognized masters. The opportunity was presented when a Tokyo TV program called 'Who Want's to Come to Japan?' found Justin's website, his interest in the craft, and invited him to be on the program. This short film uses some unused footage from a second follow up program that never made it to air.Tamaya was very generous with his time and knowledge and wants to encourage sharing his passion with this slowly disappearing art form. We hope you enjoy.www.justinmiles-automata.comhttpswww.instagram.comjustystarz
