Bons estudos! TOPIC 1 – THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES I TOPIC 2 – THE PERFECT TENSES II TOPIC 3 – THE PERFECT TENSES III 2 3 TOPIC 1 UNIT 1 THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 1 INTRODUCTION Hello, dears! A forma negativa do presente simples é realizada por meio do uso do auxiliar did not ou didn’t. O verbo, neste caso, fica na forma do infinitivo, sem o to. Exemplo: Forma afirmativa: I saw Jessica yesterday. Eu vi Jessica ontem. Forma negativa: I didn’t see Jessica yesterday. Eu não vi Jessica ontem. Quando fazemos a negação no passado usamos o auxiliar didn’t para todas as pessoas, tanto no singular, quanto no plural. Já na forma interrogativa do passado simples usamos o auxiliar did antes do sujeito, e assim como na forma negativa, o Did também é usado para todas as pessoas do singular e do plural. Veja o exemplo: Forma afirmativa: You studied Math yesterday. Você estudou matemática ontem. Forma interrogativa: Did you study Math yesterday? Você estudou matemática ontem? 6 3 PRESENT PERFECT TENSE STRUCTURES FIGURA 1 – GARFIELD FONTE: Disponível em: <https://novaescola.org.br/conteudo/2244/os-varios-usos-do-present- perfect>. Acesso em: 5 out. 2017. Observe o pequeno texto que segue: Paul is a programmer. He works at a big company. He leaves home at 7:30 am. and arrives at work at 8:00 am., but Paul doesn’t like to wake up early. He prefers to work at night. Do you know Paul? A estrutura do parágrafo está no presente. Veja como ficaria no passado: Paul was a programmer. He worked at a big company. He left home at 7:30 am. and arrived at work at 8:00 am., but Paul didn’t like to wake up early. He prefered to work at night. Did you know Paul? Do you want another example? Then, pay attention! I have studied English since 2010. IMPORTANT E Let’s learn more about this structure in English now! The author Azar (1989, p. 29), says that the present perfect expresses “the idea that something happened (or never happened) before now, at an unspecified time in the past. The exact time it happened is not important”. She adds that “If there is a specific mention of time, the simple past is used. The present perfect also expresses the repetition of an activity before now. The exact time of each repetition is not important” (AZAR, 1989, p. 29). So, she ends up saying that “the present perfect also, when used with for or since, expresses a situation that began in the past and continues to the present” (AZAR, 1989, p. 29). Como já foi mencionado anteriormente, o presente perfeito utiliza o verbo to have como auxiliar. Now, note the following structure. Acesso em: 5 out. 2017. Did you understand the comic strip? Observe sua formação: Sujeito + have/has + verbo no particípio + complemento TOPIC 1 | THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 9 No presente perfeito, utilizamos o verbo to have como auxiliar. Ele deve ser utilizado de duas maneiras: have ou has. Para a terceira pessoa do singular, he, she, it (ele, ela), usa-se has, para os demais sujeitos, usa-se have. Na apresentação da estrutura, utilizamos o termo “verbo no particípio”, você sabe o que isso quer dizer? Particípio ou participle, em inglês, refere-se a determinadas terminações (sufixos) ou formas que os verbos pedem para indicar diferentes tempos e modos verbais. IMPORTANT E Observe o exemplo com o verbo to play no presente perfeito afirmativo, em inglês: QUADRO 1 – PRESENT PERFECT AFFIRMATIVE FORM Affirmative form – to play – Present Perfect Sujeito + have/has + verbo no particípio + complemento I have played volleyball You have played volleyball She has played volleyball He has played volleyball It has played volleyball We have played volleyball You have played volleyball They have played volleyball FONTE: A autora No quadro, apresentado anteriormente, temos a forma afirmativa do verbo jogar (to play) conjugado no presente perfeito (present perfect), e o verbo to play está no particípio (Participle). Para os verbos regulares, como to play, o verbo conjugado no particípio fica da mesma maneira que no passado, ou seja, acrescentando apenas ED. Let's understand better by looking at more examples: She has worked at that company for a long time. (Ela trabalha naquela empresa há bastante tempo). UNIT 1 | ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE 10 QUADRO 2 – IRREGULAR VERBS INFINITIVE PAST PARTICIPLE TRANSLATION to arise arose arisen erguer, levantar to awake awoke awoken acordar, despertar-se to be was / were been ser, estar, ficar to bear bore borne suportar, aguentar to become became become tornar-se to begin began begun começar, iniciar to bet bet bet apostar to bite bit bitten morder to bleed bled bled sangrar to break broke broken quebrar to bring brought brought trazer to build built built construir to burn burnt/burned burnt/burned queimar to buy bought bought comprar to cast cast cast lançar to catch caught caught pegar, agarrar to choose chose chosen escolher to come came come vir to cost cost cost custar to cut cut cut cortar to deal dealt dealt tratar, lidar to dig dug dug cavar, escavar to do did done fazer to drawdrew drawn desenhar, traçar, puxar, arrastar to drink drank drunk beber to drive drove driven dirigir, guiar to eat ate eaten comer to feed fed fed alimentar, nutrir to feel felt felt sentir, notar to fight fought fought lutar, brigar to find found found achar, encontrar to fly flew flown voar They have loved each other since they were kids. Acesso em: 5 out. 2017. TOPIC 1 | THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 13 No presente perfeito, com os irregular verbs, utilizamos a terceira coluna, do quadro apresentado anteriormente, a do particípio. Vamos verificar isso em outros exemplos: I have eaten meat since I was twelve years old. (Eu como carne desde os doze anos). She has had the same car for years. (Ela tem o mesmo carro há anos). O particípio passado dos verbos irregulares, conforme apresentado, não segue regras, logo, necessitamos consultar a lista de verbos ou memorizá-los. NOTA Na estrutura do present perfect, também podemos utilizar a forma contraída. Observe o quadro que segue, ele apresenta a forma contraída do auxiliar to have, para a forma afirmativa: QUADRO 3 – PRESENT PERFECT CONTRACTED FORM I have I’ve You have You’ve She has She’s He has He’s It has It’s We have We’ve You have You’ve They have They’ve FONTE: A autora Há alguns advérbios de tempo que utilizamos frequentemente com o present perfect. Esses advérbios de tempo, em inglês, são: JUST – YET – NEVER – EVER – LATELY – SINCE – FOR. O advérbio de tempo just indica que a ação aconteceu num passado bem recente. Por exemplo: I have just met her. (Eu acabei de conhecê-la). He hasn’t just woken up. (Ele não acabou de acordar). UNIT 1 | ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE 14 O already (já) recomenda que a ação já aconteceu. Ele é utilizado apenas em frases afirmativas e interrogativas, como em: Jossua has already gone to the movies. (Jossua já foi ao cinema). Have you already worked at Microsoft? (Você já trabalhou na Microsoft?) O advérbio yet (já; ainda) é utilizado em frases interrogativas. Yet significa já, e quando utilizado em frases negativas tem o sentido de ainda. Yet é utilizado no final da frase. Por exemplo: Has she talked to her dad yet? (Ela já falou com o pai dela?). I haven’t seen this movie yet. (Eu não vi este filme ainda). O never (nunca) é utilizado para dizer que alguma coisa não aconteceu, como em: We have never been there. (Eu nunca estive lá). I have never got married. (Eu nunca me casei). O ever (alguma vez; já) é utilizado para saber se alguma ação já aconteceu alguma vez. É frequentemente empregado em perguntas, como em: Has Jenny ever travelled abroad? (Jenny já viajou para o exterior?). Have you ever gone to a rock concert? (Você já foi a um show de rock?). O advérbio de tempo lately (ultimamente) é empregado no final da frase. Por exemplo: I haven’t eaten sea food lately. (Eu não tenho comido frutos do mar ultimamente). This computer hasn’t worked lately. (Este computador não tem funcionado ultimamente). O since (desde) esclarece que determinada ação iniciou no passado e continua até o presente. Observe os exemplos: Jack has been sick since last year. (Jack está doente desde o ano passado). They have played this game since 2 o’clock. (Eles estão jogando esse jogo desde as duas horas). E, por fim, o advérbio for (há), que também mostra que determinada ação iniciou no passado e continua até o presente, como em: My parents have lived in this house for ten years. (Meus pais moram nesta casa há dez anos). Our dog has been with us for a long time. (Nosso cachorro está conosco há muito tempo). Now, let’s understand this important topic in English. Pay attention! Murphy (1994, p. 14) says that “the present perfect simple is have/has + past participle. The past participle often ends in -ed (finished/decides, etc.), but many important verbs are irregular (lost/done/been/written etc.)”. He adds that “when we use the present perfect there is always a connection with now” (MURPHY, 1994, p. 14). The action in the past has a result now, take a look in some examples: Where’s your book? I don’t know. I have lost it. (I haven’t got it now) She told me her surname, but I have forgotten it. (I can’t remember it now) Is Bob here? No, he has gone out. (he is out now) TOPIC 1 | THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 15 I can’t find my wallet. Have you seen it? (Do you know where it is now?) We use the present perfect to give new information or to announce a recent happening: Ow! I have hurt my toe. The road is closed. There has been an accident. You can use the present perfectwith JUST, ALREADY and YET: JUST – a short time ago – example: Would you like something to drink? No, thanks. I have just had a lemonade. ALREADY – says that something happened sooner than expected – example: Don’t forget to post the postcard, will you? I have just posted it. YET – until now – It used only in questions and negative sentences, example: I have written the postcard, but I have not posted it yet. Murphy (1994, p. 14) warns that there is a difference between gone (to) and been (to), as in: Bob is away on holiday. He has gone to Brazil (= he is there now or his way there). Beth is back home from holiday now. She has been to Spain (= she has now come back from Spain). DICAS Você já deve ter ouvido falar no famoso quadrinho Sweeping Problem, do norte-americano Harvey Pekar, que apresenta um homem varrendo o chão, na tentativa de recolher a sujeira (areia para gatos) com uma pá. Nervoso por causa da dificuldade, ele questiona o leitor: Have you ever tried to sweep something like cat litter into a dust pan? Nessa situação, o personagem pergunta se alguém já passou por aquela situação alguma vez na vida e utiliza a estrutura do present perfect porque a pergunta trata de um passado indeterminado. Deixamos essa dica para você, que já é ou será professor. Você pode escolher um quadrinho, que apresenta a marca linguística ou aspectos do vocabulário que necessite ensinar e contextualizar o uso dessa estrutura gramatical que, de complexa, passará a simples. Vale a pena tentar! 3.2 PRESENT PERFECT TENSE – NEGATIVE FORM Iniciamos o estudo sobre a estrutura present perfect tense – negative form, compreendendo a tira que segue: UNIT 1 | ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE 16 FIGURA 3 – CALVIN FONTE: Disponível em: <https://novaescola.org.br/conteudo/2244/os-varios-usos-do-present- perfect>. Acesso em: 5 out. 2017. Continuamos nosso estudo com uma tira de uma série criada pelo autor norte-americano Bill Watterson, intitulada Calvin and Hobbes. O uso da estrutura “You haven't earned e I've never heard” foi utilizada pelos personagens. No caso dessa tirinha, os personagens são Calvin e Suzy. Calvin pede para copiar as respostas de Suzy e ela não deixa. Tanto quando ela explica o motivo da recusa como quando ele comenta a resposta dela, o present perfect foi utilizado e, como já mencionamos, serve para fazer referência a situações sem tempo determinado, como o apresentado na tira. Partindo disso, passamos a entender melhor a forma negativa da estrutura do present perfect. Na forma negativa, utilizamos haven’t (ou have not) e hasn’t (has not). Observe a formação do presente perfeito na forma negativa e alguns exemplos: Sujeito + have/has + not + verbo no particípio + complemento I haven’t eaten meat since I was ten years old. (Eu não como carne desde os dez anos de idade). They have not phoned. (Eles não ligaram). She hasn’t made many mistakes. (Ela não cometeu muitos erros). Observe o exemplo com o verbo to play no presente perfeito negativo, em inglês: TOPIC 1 | THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 17 QUADRO 4 – PRESENT PERFECT NEGATIVE FORM Negative form – to play – Present Perfect Sujeito + have/has + not + verbo no particípio + complemento I have not played volleyball You have not played volleyball She has not played volleyball He has not played volleyball It has not played volleyball We have not played volleyball You have not played volleyball They have not played volleyball FONTE: A autora No quadro, apresentado anteriormente, temos a forma negativa do verbo jogar (to play) conjugado no presente perfeito (present perfect), e o verbo to play está no particípio (participle). Na estrutura do present perfect – negative form, também podemos utilizar a forma contraída. Observe o quadro que segue, ele apresenta a forma contraída do auxiliar to have, para a forma negativa: QUADRO 5 - PRESENT PERFECT CONTRACTED FORM I have not I haven’t You have not You haven’t She has not She hasn’t He has not He hasn’t It has not It hasn’t We have not We haven’t You have not You haven’t They have not They haven’t FONTE: A autora Para finalizar a explanação do present perfect negative form, observe a tirinha que segue, especialmente a estrutura da fala do primeiro personagem, quando menciona o tempo que ele não se alimenta. TOPIC 1 | THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 19 A partir da tira de Lee, apresentada anteriormente, estudaremos a estrutura que forma o present perfect interrogative form, que, como podemos observar, o auxiliar have e has passa para a frente do sujeito, como em um dos dizeres de uma das little girls: What have you learned? Agora, observe a formação do present perfect – interrogative form: Have/has + Sujeito + verbo no particípio + complemento + (?) (question mark) Observe o quadro com o verbo to play no presente perfeito interrogativo, em inglês: QUADRO 6 – PRESENT PERFECT INTERROGATIVE FORM Interrogative form – to play – Present Perfect Have/has + sujeito + verbo no particípio + complemento + (?) FONTE: A autora No quadro, apresentado anteriormente, temos a forma interrogativa do verbo jogar (to play) conjugado no presente perfeito (present perfect), e o verbo to play está no particípio (participle). Read the poem The Circle of Life, by Taos Pueblo Native, 1974: I have killed the deer, I have crushed the grasshopper and the plants he feeds upon, I have cut through the heart of trees growing old and straight. I have taken fish from the water And birds from the sky. SELF STUDY UNIT 1 | ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE 20 1.He has taken… 2. He has cut through… 3. He has killed... 4. He has crushed… 5. He has needed… ( ) animals like the deer. ( ) the death of other living things. ( ) first from water and birds from the sky. ( ) the heart of trees. ( ) insects and plants. Estudamos que ele é formado pelo verbo auxiliar to have (have/has) + past participle (particípio passado) do verbo principal e, ainda, pode existir um complemento, certo? Como em: I have worked on a new project. (Eu tenho trabalhado em um novo projeto) (TORRES, 2007). Já o present perfect continuous apresenta uma ação que não foi concluída, isto é, ela (a ação) ainda está acontecendo. Esta estrutura é formada pelo verbo to have (have/has) + o verbo to be conjugado no present perfect (presente perfeito) + o gerúndio (-ING) do verbo principal. Como em: I have been working on a new project. (Eu tenho estado a trabalhar em um novo projeto.) (TORRES, 2007). In my life I have needed death So that mylife can be. When I die, I must give life To what has nourished me. The Earth receives my body and gives it to the caterpillars, to the birds and to the coyotes. Each in its own time so that the circle of Life is never broken. FONTE: Disponível em: <https://cultant.weebly.com/poems.html>. SELF STUDY Let's know more detail! Follow us! 4.1 PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE – AFFIRMATIVE FORM Vamos iniciar a compreensão desta estrutura partindo da leitura da tirinha: FIGURA 6 – PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS FONTE: Disponível em: <http://campus.belgrano.ort.edu.ar/ingles/ ciclosuperior/2012-5G-Senior-4>. Acesso em: 15 nov. 2017. HE'S BEEN WAITING FOR YOU FOR SIXTY YEARS. UNIT 1 | ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE 22 Sujeito + auxiliar to have + been + verbo no gerúndio (ING) + complemento Você percebe, acadêmico, que a utilização do auxiliar to have segue a mesma regra do present perfect. Assim, para a terceira pessoa do singular he, she, it utiliza-se o auxiliar has, para os demais sujeitos I, you, we, they, utiliza-se o have. Let's check this in some examples: She has been studying Portuguese for five years. (Ela estuda português há dez anos). She has been driving for hours. (Ele está dirigindo há horas). They have been playing basketball for a few minutes. (Eles estão jogando basquetebol há alguns minutos). My brother has been taking karate lessons. (Meu irmão está fazendo aulas de caratê). Acadêmico, você entendeu o uso do present perfect continuous tense? Ele é utilizado para expressar ações que começaram no passado e continuam até o presente, porém enfatizando a continuidade das ações, ok? UNI Now, let’s understand this important topic in English. Pay attention! Azar (1989, p. 36), explains that this tense is used to indicate “the duration os an activity that began in the past and continues to the present. When the tense has this meaning, it is used with time words such as for, since all morning, all day, all week”. Take a look: Right now, I am sitting at my desk. a) I have been sitting here since seven o’clock. b) I have been sitting here for two hours. (AZAR, 1989, p. 36). The same author says that “when the tense is used without any specific mention of time, it expresses a general activity in progress recently, lately” (AZAR, 1989, p. 36). For example: I have been thinking about changing my major. Dessa maneira, vamos observar a estrutura do present perfect continuous: TOPIC 1 | THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 23 Azar (1989, p. 36) says that with “certain verbs (most notably live, work, teach) there is little or no difference in meaning between the two tenses when since or for is used”. Example: I have lived here since 1990. I have been living here since 1990. Now, let’s compare the present continuous tense and the present perfect continuous tense. Take a look: QUADRO 7 – PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS X PRESENT CONTINUOUS I am doing Present Continuous NOW I have doing Present Perfect Continuous NOW Don’t disturb me now. I ‘m working. We need an umbrella. It’s raining. Harry up! We’re waiting. I’ve working hard, so now I’m going to have a rest. The ground is wet. It’s been raining. We’re been waiting for an hour. FONTE: A autora 1 Read the situations and complete the sentences: a) The train started two hours ago. It’s still raining now. It _________________ for two hours. b) We started waiting for the bus 20 minutes ago. We’re still waiting now. We _________________ for 20 minutes. c) I started Spanish classes in December. I’m still learning Spanish now. I ___________________ since December. d) Ann began looking for a job six months ago. She’s still looking now. ____________________ for six months. e) Mary started working in London on 18 January. She’s still working there now. ____________________ since 18th January. f) Years ago you started writing to a penfriend. You still write to each other regularly now. We __________________________ for years. NOTA 4.3 PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE – INTERROGATIVE FORM Quando utilizamos a forma interrogativa, no tempo verbal present perfect continuous o auxiliar to have é posicionado em frente ao sujeito. Acompanhe os exemplos: Have you been working since 11 a.m.? (Você está trabalhando desde às 11 horas?) Has he been seeing her without permission? (Ele a está vendo sem permissão?) Have you been living here for a long time? (Você está morando aqui há muito tempo?) Look how to conjugate the verb to play with the present perfect continuous in the affirmative, negative and interrogative forms: QUADRO 8 – PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS AFFIRMATIVE, NEGATIVE AND INTERROGATIVE FORMS Affirmative Negative Interrogative I have been playing I haven't been playing Have I been playing? You have been playing You haven't been playing Have you been playing? She has been playing She hasn't been playing Has he been playing? He has been playing He hasn't been playing Has she been playing? Vejamos como essa estrutura se apresenta observando alguns exemplos: You haven’t been sleeping well for a few nights. (Você não está dormindo bem há algumas noites). Ann hasn’t been going out with that boy. (Ana não está saindo com aquele garoto). The kids haven’t been riding their bike at night. It’s too dangerous. (As crianças não estão andando de bicicleta à noite. É muito perigoso). TOPIC 1 | THE PAST TENSE AND THE PERFECT TENSES 25 FONTE: Disponível em: <http://mundoeducacao.bol.uol.com.br/ingles/present-perfect- continuous.htm>. Acesso em: 15 nov. 2017. It has been playing It hasn't been playing Has it been playing? They have been playing They haven't been playing Have they been playing? We have been playing We haven't been playing Have we been playing? We studied that “the present perfect tense refers to an action or state that either occurred at an indefinite time in the past” (e.g., we have talked before) or “began in the past and continued to the present time” (e.g., he has grown impatient over the last hour). This tense is formed by have / has + the past participle (MURPHY, 1994, p. 17). We know that the present perfect continuous is used basically “to emphasize the continuity of an action that started in the past and extends to the present and/ or future”. We form the present perfect continuous “using two elements, which are: the present perfect of the verb “to be” (have/ has been) and the present particle of the main verb (base+ing)” (MURPHY, 1994, p. 20). Relembrados seus usos, veremos como isso tudo acontece de maneira contextualizada. Stay with us! UNIT 1 | ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE 26 5.1 READING AND COMPREHENSION TEXT WITH PERFECT TENSES Read the text “The Green Challenge” below and answer the questions about it: Don’t forget to pay attention in the perfect tenses. Have you ever heard of a plant called Madagascar periwinkle? It is used to treat leukemia and other serious diseases, but it may soon disappear because of intense deforestation. In the last decades Madagascar has lost about 90 percent of its tropical forests. Tropical Forests cover only two percent of the earth is surface, but 70% of all plants and animals live there. To provide land for farming, ranching and other activities, people have been cutting or burning down those forests. More than half of the world is tropical forests have disappeared since the beginning of last century. In the Amazon, scientists estimate that an area of forest the size of a football field is destroyed every minute. The destruction of tropical forest. The extiction of animal and plant species. The pollution of soils, lakes, rivers, and seas. Air pollution. Acid rain. The threats to our environment are nothing new. Man is use (and abuse) of natural resources has been in the newspapers for a long time, but in the last decades the human impact on the environment has been absolutely disastrous. Modern man has seen the world as something to conquer, dominate, and exploit. He has been treating the environment as an endless source of resources, a kind of Ali Baba is cave providing for all needs and all desires. So, what is next? Should we give up? Let it happen? The challenge is to find new ways to protect and preserve our environment. But we have been saying that for years... It is time to stop cutting down forests and cut down deforestation instead! Have you ever herd the phrase "The world is coming to an end"? I have just seen it written on a wall. Sadly, I have never felt it so possible. Já quando mencionamos a quantidade de tempo decorrido, há quanto tempo a ação é praticada, utilizamos o present perfect com for. 6 THE WEATHER The weather is a practical topic in the English classes. This topic is so importante because the weather can influence, for example, our fashion choices. And the topic weather can be used to start a talk with someone that we don’t know, so, it can be used as a good ice breaker to start a conversation (CHIN, 2009). If making your own, use two different colors of 3” X 5” card. Call all students (half the class) with a yellow card (for example) to the front and have them stand in a line facing the class. 2) The other half of the class stands in front of the first line. If there are an odd number of students, either one questioner waits for someone to question, or the extra person in the answer line waits until the line moves. 3) Each person with a yellow question card (for example) questions the student standing in font of him/her. The student asking the question fills in the blanks with the correct form of the verb given on the card. When everyone has answered the question, the students in the answer line move down one and are asked a new question. Continue until all the students in the answer line have talked to every student in the question line. (the students in the question line do not move). 4) The students in the lines now switch positions, and the former answerers are now the questioners. What have you ____________ (eat) this morning?
