In order to be able to communicate ideas and thoughts in a foreign language effectively and efficiently, students need to develop competency in four language skills, namely:
 Speaking;
 Listening;
 Reading;

This term refers to the use of language to make meaning. As learners are involved in this meaning-making process, they are also involved in learning. That is to say, their own language production helps to mediate their learning process. As learners produce language, they are able to reflect upon their own language output in an iterative process of production and learning.
Languaging
Languaging helps students notice their progress in learning the target language. Besides, it provides some clues on which elements they should focus more.

Reading and listening are known as receptive skills, because they enable students to receive language and decode it to understand a message.
Speaking and writing, on the other hand, are known as productive skills. They are the ones that enable students to use the language they have learned in order to produce messages either orally or in written form.

People produce language, either orally or in written form, because they want to interact with their interlocutors. Therefore, there are some things they need to take into consideration before trying to convey a message:
What are they speaking or writing about?
Who are they speaking or writing to?
Why are they speaking or writing about that topic?
Where are they speaking or writing about it?
When are they speaking or writing about it?

Intercultural competence is the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of other cultures.

2) Effectively: Valued goals or rewards (relative to costs and alternatives) are accomplished.
In interactions with people from foreign cultures, a person who is interculturally competent understands the culture-specific concepts of perception, thinking, feeling, and acting.

 Listening, the most widely used language skill, is often used in conjunction with the other skills of speaking, reading, and writing. Listening is not only a skill area in language performance, but is also a critical means of acquiring a second language (L2).
Listening
Listening comprehension is a very important skill for L2 learners to master in order to be able to communicate effectively in a foreign language.

Listening involves real-time processing, generally without the option of going back to earlier sections of the passage the listener may have missed;
It is difficult for learners to exert control over the speed of text delivery all the time – that is, sometimes it is not possible to control the rate at which text is received;
Spoken information is usually spontaneous. Hence, it doesn’t usually involve planning and editing before delivery.

Reading is a very complex process which involves many stages. It is through the use of several levels of knowledge, such as linguistic, textual and world knowledge that the reader is able to construct the meaning of a text.
Reading is also regarded as interactive due to the very reason that there are varied levels of knowledge interacting between themselves during the act.

Skimming – running one’s eyes over a text quickly just to get the gist of it;
Scanning – going through a text quickly in order to find a specific piece of information;
Extensive reading – reading longer texts fluently, usually for pleasure;
Intensive reading – reading shorter texts in detail in order to extract specific information from it.
