She was raised in a rural and clerical environment, but in which art and knowledge were valued. She started writing literary texts around the age of 12. And at the age of 20, she had already reached a certain artistic maturity. Her father, the clergyman George Austen (1731-1805), encouraged his eight children, including the two girls, to study. The writer's mother, Cassandra Austen (1739-1827), wrote satirical verse. Thus, Jane was inserted in a rural and clerical universe, but also surrounded by art and knowledge. In 1787, Jane Austen began to write, as some of her manuscripts attest. But it was in 1795 that she began writing her first great novel — Sense and Sensibility. Between 1796 and 1797, she wrote Pride and Prejudice. Her father sent the work to a publisher, but it was turned down. Don't stop now... There's more after the publicity ;) 3 Reagind comprehension - Lesson 1 Before Reading (Antes de ler) In this lesson, we will be using Jane Austen's abbreviated biography Objective: to promote the student's historical knowledge and linguistic diversity Text genres: biography She writer never married, but in 1802 she accepted the proposal of young Harris Bigg- Wither (1781-1833). However, the next day, she changed her mind. In addition, little is known about the sentimental life of the writer. Her sister Cassandra (1773-1845) is said to have, after Jane's death, destroyed some of her letters and deleted portions of others, with the intention, it seems, of preserving her sister's privacy. In 1803, her novel entitled Northanger Abbey was accepted by a publisher, but for unknown reasons, publication did not take place. With her father's death in 1805, the writer, along with her mother and sister, went to live in Southampton. Four years later, in 1809, they moved to the village of Chawton. It was around this time that her brother Henry (1771-1850) contacted publishers in an attempt to publish his sister's works. Thus, in 1811, Sense and Sensibility was published for the first time, but anonymously, that is, without the name of its author. In 1813, the book Pride and Prejudice was published and became quite popular. Thus, in 1814, when Mansfield Park was published, the author's works were successful, well-regarded by critics and even received praise from George IV (1762-1830), the Prince Regent. However, they continued to be published anonymously, since, at the time, women were not respected in society for their intellectual capacity. Thus, the name Jane Austen was unknown when, in 1816, the writer experienced the first symptoms of Addison's disease, which caused her death on July 18, 1817, in Winchester. Only then did her authorship of novels become public, and Henry took it upon himself to do so. 4 1 2 3 Reagind comprehension - Lesson 1 Reading for General Comprehension Choose the main objective of the text .
