PHRASAL VERBS
A phrasal verb is a verb + particle (preposition or adverb). It is usually difficult to guess the meaning of the phrasal verb from the words themselves. For example:
Can you hold on? = Can you wait a moment?
Okay, carry on with the exercise. = Okay, continue with the exercise.
I ran into Sam at the cinema. = I met Sam unexpectedly at the cinema.
 
Verb + object + particle OR Verb + particle + object
o Take off = remove:
Take your shoes off/ Take off your shoes before you go in the living room.
o Try on = try wearing new clothes, shoes
You should always try new shoes on/ Try on new shoes before you buy them.
o Look up = find a word in a dictionary
If you don’t know what ‘exasperated’ means, look it up.
o Pick up = meet someone in a car and drive them somewhere.
My mum is going to pick me up and take me to my friend’s house after school.

1. Complete the spaces with a phrasal verb from the box. Change the form if necessary. Then translate the sentences.

2. Underline the correct preposition to complete the phrasal verb. Then translate the sentences. 
a) Lots of fruit and vegetables will help get on / over / up your cold. 
T: Muitas frutas e vegetais vão te ajudar a superar o seu resfriado. 
b) I never try up / off / on clothes before buying them. It takes too much time.
T: Eu nunca experimento roupas antes de comprá-las. Isso leva muito tempo.
c) My mum says I take into / down / after my grandmother because I talk too much.
T: Minha mãe diz que eu puxei minha avó porque eu falo demais.
d) I suggested taking on / up / down a sport to help him lose weight.

h) You should take your hat in / over / off in the cinema. People will get angry with you.
T: Você deveria tirar o chapéu no cinema. As pessoas vão ficar irritadas com você
i) She has to look on / in / after her younger brother when her parents are out.
T: Ela precisa cuidar do irmão mais novo quando os pais estão fora.
j) I had lots of shopping and people were angry with me because I was holding on / off / up the queue.
T: Eu estava com muitas compras e as pessoas estavam irritadas comigo porque eu estava atrasando a fila.
3. Complete the second sentence with a phrasal verb from the box so it means the same as the first. Change the form if necessary.

f) My neighbor has to care for his mother who is very old.

4. Escolha 5 phrasal verbs com “Make” e escreva 3 frases para cada um. Os significados do phrasal verb escolhido devem ser diferentes em cada uma das frases.
1.1. He makes out all the math test.

1.3. When I was child, I make out as an astronaut.
 
2.1. Silvia has a party today. Now she is making up as a princess.
2.2. During the annual meeting Ana and Paul was arguing about their teams’ results, but in the end of the meeting, they made up. 
2.3. A Pharmacist was working all day in the drugstore because he needs to make up the medicine pill for the customer.

2. Work out: - exercitar ou fazer atividades físicas.
3. Get on: - indica entrar em um veículo ou transporte.
4. Get off - significa sair de um veículo ou transporte.
5. Come Acros: Encontrar por acaso 
6. Grown Up : Crescer - significa amadurecer ou se tornar adulto.
7. Look Up : pesquisar no dicionário ou na internet.
8. Look Down : Olhar para baixo - significa direcionar o olhar para a direção inferior.
9. Look Around: Olhar ao redor - examinar o que está ao seu redor.
10. Look At: Olhar para - direcionar o olhar para algo específico.
11. Wrap Up - significa terminar ou completar algo.
12. Top Up : Recarregar -completar até o topo.
13. Meet Up : Encontrar-se com alguém 
14. Show Off: Exibir-se - chamar a atenção dos outros.
15. Chill Out: Relaxar.
16. Come Up : Surgir - significa ocorrer ou aparecer de repente ou ser mencionado.
17. Get Up- Levantar-se 
18. Wake Up : Acordar.
19. Come Back : Voltar – Está no lugar e voltou. (Esteve recentemente)
20. Go Back : Voltar – não está no lugar. (Rude)
PHRASES WITH PHRASAL VERBS:
1. Go back: I need to go back to the library to pick up some books.
2. Come back: Please come back soon, I miss you.
3. Chill out: Let's just chill out at the end of the semester.
4. Wrap up: We need to wrap up my final Course Project.
5. Come across: Yesterday, I came across an old photo of when I was a child.
6. Get off: You should get off the bus at the next stop.
7. Get on: Don't forget to get on the train before it leaves.
8. Come Up: A new opportunity came up at work, and I decided to apply for it.
9. Meet Up: Let's meet up for coffee tomorrow.
10. Show Off: She always shows off her talents.11. Look Up: I need to look up the address of the restaurant.
12. Wake Up: I usually wake up at 7 a.m. every day.
13. Look Down: She looked down at her phone while walking.
