BRITISH LITERATURE THROUGHOUT THE CENTURIES: ELT
CONNECTIONS

Working with English literature can be of great benefit to students. With the
project to implement the reading of English literature books, it is possible to
implant in English language students the desire to understand more about the
language they are learning.
The first work with the students would be with the first book of the trilogy “His
Dark Materials - Northern Lights”. Written by Philip Pullman (1995), these books
have sold over 18 million copies, won numerous literature awards, and had film
and TV versions. This book has connections with other books of English
literature, such as: Shadow and Bones (Leigh Bardugo, 2012), Dracula (Bram
Stoker, 1897) and Northanger Abbey (Jane Austen, 1817), books written in
different periods of English literature (Renaissance, Romanticism and Victorian
Era), which despite being so different, have similar aspects.
In Northern Lights, it is a fantasy, its story is dense, where magic,
philosophy, theology and religion are addressed, but the language is simple and
can be read by young people and adults. The book deals with admiration, love
and friendship, with correct values, as demonstrated in the relationships between
Lyra (main character) and her friends. But also ambition, power and the heinous
things people do because of them.
Shadow and Bones (Bardugo, 2012), is an elevated fantasy that follows the
characters as they try to navigate a war-torn world with multiple factions, some
frightening creatures, and a darkness that threatens everyone's survival.
With Dracula (Stoker, 1897), the author uses a more Gothic and erotic
approach by working with monsters that, in his time, were creatures to be hated
and where people were afraid of succumbing to dark desires. The author also
played with a bit of romanticism in his work, even though it was from the Victorian
era.
In the book Northanger Abbey (Austen, 1817), it follows the desires and
learnings of the main character, which, like in Northern Lights, the main character
is also motivated by mystery. Catherine becomes a woman, becomes a heroine,
and, despite her daydreams, matures, showing us how literature can influence
the social formation of human beings. The author of the book also used satire to
criticize the Gothic novels of the time.
The project will be divided into four sections, each corresponding to a period
of two months. In the first session, students will be presented with a study on
English Literature, its characteristics, literary examples, films, summaries, and
everything that may be related to the theme. It will be a period of knowledge and
proximity to the theme. In the second section, the chosen book will be presented,
there will be a previous discussion about it and the students will have a period of
two months to read the book, as well as to familiarize themselves with its trilogy.
With this time, students can read calmly, taking time to understand what they are
reading and looking for meanings of words they did not understand during the
reading. In the next two months, students will have to choose a period of English
Literature and after choosing, look for a book that belongs to the fantasy genre
and read it. Students should try to find differences and similarities between writing
and style. After that, the students delivered the activity saying the similarities they
found. In the next two months, students will have the following task: write a 1,000-
word story in the fantasy genre, following the way English-speaking writers
worked. Finally, once done, students will post this story on a fanfiction website
called Wattpad. They will have two months to publicize the stories so that as
many people as possible can read them. The top three most viewed earn an extra
point.
With this project I see that we can open students' minds to a new world of
words and meanings, a new understanding of what English literature is and open
doors to a greater interest in the English language. I hope that students learn how
to critically read, to evaluate a text, how to improve writing and how reading and
writing help to create better, well-written texts with a diversity of words and
meanings.
