Connectives can be conjunctions (eg but, when, because) or connecting adverbs (eg however, then, therefore). Connecting adverbs (and adverbial phrases and clauses) maintain the cohesion of a text in several basic ways, including: ADDITION: also, furthermore, moreover OPPOSITION: however, nevertheless, on the other hand REINFORCING: besides, anyway, after all EXPLAINING: for example, in other words, that is to say LISTING: first(ly), first of all, finally INDICATING RESULT: therefore, consequently, as a result INDICATING TIME: just then, meanwhile, later EXISTEM TRÊS TIPOS DE CONJUNÇÕES Coordinating conjunctions Correlative conjunctions Subordinating conjunctions. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS São aquelas que ligam duas palavras ou duas orações independentes. São elas: for (já que, porque), and (e), but (mas), yet (ainda), nor (nem), or (ou) e so (então). Exemplos: I believed her, for surely she would not lie to me. (Acreditei nela porque tenho certeza de que ela não mentiria pra mim.) They have offices in England and France. (Eles têm escritórios na Inglaterra e na França ). They haven’t met him yet. (Eles ainda não o conhecem ). She seemed neither surprised nor worried. (Ela não parecia nem surpresa nem preocupada.) She could go, or stay a little more. (Ela poderia ir ou ficar mais um pouco.) CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS São aquelas que sempre aparecem aos pares, mas não uma ao lado da outra. Exemplos: BOTH... AND ( tanto…quanto) EITHER... OR (ou…ou) NEITHER…NOR (nem…nem) NOT ONLY … BUT ALSO (não somente…mas também) AS/SO…AS (tão quanto) WHETHER…OR (ou…ou) Both Maria and Beth are pretty. (Tanto Maria quanto Beth são bonitas). Either I will travel by car or by plane. (Viajarei de carro ou de trem). Neither Paul nor Phil are engineers. (Nem Paul nem Phil são engenheiros). Not only spiders, but also snakes are dangerous. (Não somente as aranhas, como também as cobras são perigosas). She is as beautiful as her mother. (Ela é tão bonita quanto a mãe.) Have you decided whether you will come or not? (Você decidiu se virá ou não?)
