Referenciada ao um evento: Quando ela chegar, diga a ela que o namorado ligou e é para ela ligar de volta. Exige controle atencional, monitorização, sujeito a interferências diversas. Resumo de Salthouse (2010) Salthouse, T. (2010). Selective review of cognitive aging. JINS, 16, 754-760. Salthouse, T. (2010). Selective review of cognitive aging. JINS, 16, 754-760. Reuter-Lorenz, P. A., & Park, D. C. (2014). How Does it STAC Up? Revisiting the Scaffolding Theory of Aging and Cognition. Neuropsychology Review, 24(3), 355–370. Habid et al., Aging Neuropsychol Cogn 2007, 14, 257-273. Great interindividual variability in cognitive aging Cognitive and non-cognitive data from 1500 adults in the Betula longitudinal study analysed with factor analyses to classify participants into “usual” x “sucessful agers”. There was great heterogeneity in levels of cognitive performance. Neurodegradation with age Neural challenges Structural changes: • cortical thinning and regional atrophy • loss of white matter integrity • dopamine depletion, • amyloid and tau burden Functional deterioration Maladaptive, age-related brain activity: • dedifferentiation (decreased specificity) of ventral-visual and motor areas • decreased memory-related recruitment of medial temporal lobe regions • dysregulation of the default mode network Reuter-Lorenz, P. A., & Park, D. C. (2014). How Does it STAC Up? Revisiting the Scaffolding Theory of Aging and Cognition. Neuropsychology Review, 24(3), 355–370. Cortical atrophy is correlated with age Is successful cognitive aging explained by a youthful brain? in other words: To what extent is high cognitive performance explained by brain maintenance? Two recent examples: • WCST performance and cortical atrophy • Episodic memory performance and BOLD activation in fMRI Major issue in cognitive aging The right prefrontal (RPF) and parietal cortices are most consistently recruited during the WCST, with less consistent findings of the temporal and occipital lobe, and subcortical gray matter. Older adults were divided into : Lowest WCST accuracy n=20 Highest WCST accuracy n=21 They did not differ in age, education or Digit Symbol 5 measures of EM: memorization of commands, lists of words Structural MRI Functional FMRI captured during a categorization task of words into abstratas or concrete. Decline in EM was associated with lower activation of the left hippocampus. Decline in EM was associated with higher activation of the left and right parahippocampal gyrus. There was also significant volume reduction in the right HC among decliners. • Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies report more pronounced changes in working and episodic memory. • Neuroimaging studies have shown several changes in brain structure and function which correlate with age but not always with memory performance. • Recent studies are now establishing a stronger link between cognitive and neural changes along aging.
