COMPARATIVE ANDCOMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVESUPERLATIVE Unit 1 Comparative x Superlative: Quais suas diferenças? Usamos a forma comparativa para comparar duas coisas e a forma superlativa para dizer que algo/ alguém é superior em algo. QUAIS SUAS DIFERENÇAS?QUAIS SUAS DIFERENÇAS? She is the tallest! He is taller than her. She is smaller than he. She is the smallest of them. We use the adjectives and the adverbs to make the comparisons, let's check! The comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs: There are two forms for the adjectives in English: a comparative form (older, more beautiful) and a superlative form (oldest, most beautiful). When the adjectives is short you take er/est and when they are long you take more/most. The same as adjective, the adverbs can have two forms: a comparative form (faster, more gently) and a superlative form (fastest, most gently). EXAMPLESEXAMPLES Your love is so much sweeter than everything I tasted. You make it easier to be. You are the smartest person I know. I'm the youngest woman in my class. This work is much more difficult than I thought. My city is the most beautiful city in the world. COMPARATIVE IN SENTENCES COMPARATIVE IN SENTENCES We can use the comparative in sentences to Compare quantities: There are more cats in her house. There's less traffic on weekends. Make comparisons: She is more beautiful than you. Yesterday was the most special day of my life. COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE How can we compare one thing to another? When we say that someone is smart we just know that this person is smart, but when we say that someone is smarter, we know that she or he is smarter than anyone else. We use the comparative form to make comparison between two things or people. This is what turns it different from the superlative form. When we say “she is the smallest”, shows us that out of all the people she is the one, she is the winner, nobody is smaller than her. Because of that we use the comparative form we making a comparison between two things or people, as in the example: 'your book is bigger than mine'. And when we want to say that something or someone is unique in that thing then we would have used the superlative form and say: “He has the biggest feet of everybody here”. OTHER EXAMPLESOTHER EXAMPLES I like you today more than I did yesterday. Of all the songs, that one seems the least deserving of the award. She is the owner of the best cake ever. I can do it better than you. He is the youngest man in his hometown. My mother is older than may father. Another tips of constructions used in the comparisons are: not so...as and as...as. Look at the examples: I'm not so pretty as you. She is not so shy as me. She is as happy as you are. The weather this autumn in my city is as bad as in yours.
