1 Língua Inglesa I Prof. Aline Priscilla Brancalhão Züge 2 Tópico da Aula 16: - Past Simple: other verbs (Unidade 4) AULA 16 3 Nesta aula, vamos continuar nossos estudos acerca do tempo verbal Past Simple, o qual já vimos com o verbo to be. Have a good time! Vejamos, primeiramente, a forma afirmativa. PAST SIMPLE 6 PAST SIMPLE Emilia: Hello, Juan. How was the movie last night? Juan: It was OK. But we were a bit disappointed. We thought it would be better. But after the movies we went to that restaurant, you know, behind the school? And the food there was simply delicious! We ate a lot! And what about you? What did you and Elif do? Emilia: We didn’t want to go out, because we were too tired. So we stayed home and talked a lot! Later, we decided to watch a movie on TV. We watched a horror movie. So scary! Juan: You and Elif? A horror movie? Tell me another one! Emilia: That’s true! And we loved it! 7 As palavras destacadas em negrito são verbos na forma afirmativa do Past Simple: thought, went, ate, stayed, talked, decided, watched, loved. PAST SIMPLE 10 Na Língua Inglesa, existem verbos regulares e irregulares. PAST SIMPLE 11 Tome o verbo “talk”, como exemplo, na conjugação do Present Simple: PAST SIMPLE 12 PAST SIMPLE Affirmative form Possible translation I talk Eu falo You talk Você fala He talks Ele fala She talks Ela fala It talks Ele/ela fala We talk Nós falamos You talk Vocês falam They talk Eles falam 13 Veja, agora, a conjugação do mesmo verbo no Past Simple: PAST SIMPLE To talk – past simple Possible translation I talked Eu falei/falava You talked Você falou/falava He talked Ele falou/falava She talked Ela falou/falava It talked Ele/ela falou/falava We talked Nós falamos/falávamos You talked Vocês falaram/falavam They talked Eles falaram/falavam 14 Para todas as pessoas do discurso, o verbo no Past Simple mantém a mesma forma. PAST SIMPLE 21 PAST SIMPLE Base form Translation Past Simple accept aceitar accepted achieve alcançar, conquistar achieved admit admitir admitted affect afetar affected agree concordar agreed answer responder answered arrive chegar arrived ask perguntar, pedir asked believe acreditar believed 22 PAST SIMPLE call chamar called change mudar changed chegar ajudar helped close fechar closed compare comparar compared create criar created dance dançar danced decide decidir decided develop desenvolver developed discover descobrir discovered 23 PAST SIMPLE explain explicar explained finish terminar finished follow seguir followed jump pular jumped kill matar killed kiss beijar kissed live viver, morar lived need precisar needed open abrir opened play jogar, brincar, tocar (um instrumento musical) played prepare preparar prepared 24 Veja alguns exemplos de construções com verbos regulares no Past Simple: a. They followed Megan on Instagram until she closed her account. PAST SIMPLE 26 i. I finished my homework before my father arrived home. Alguns exemplos: PAST SIMPLE 28 a. to go – went (ir) b. to eat – ate (comer) c. to have – had (ter) d. to hit – hit (bater, atingir) e. to take – took (pegar, levar) PAST SIMPLE 29 A lista a seguir traz alguns exemplos de verbos irregulares. SOME IRREGULAR VERBS: PAST SIMPLE 30 PAST SIMPLE Present Tense Simple Past Translation awake awoke acordar, despertar-se become became se tornar; se transformar begin began começar break broke quebrar; romper; violar; interromper; cancelar; falir bring brought trazer build built construir; edificar; fabricar burn burnt queimar; incendiar buy bought comprar catch caught pegar 31 PAST SIMPLE choose chose escolher; selecionar come came vir; chegar cut cut cortar; partir do did fazer draw drew desenhar dream dreamt sonhar drink drank beber drive drove dirigir fall fell cair; descer; abaixar-se 32 PAST SIMPLE feel felt sentir; perceber; experimentar find found achar; encontrar fly flew voar; viajar (aérea) forget forgot esquecer get got receber; conseguir; obter give gave dar; entregar go went ir grow grew crescer hear heard escutar; ouvir know knew saber; conhecer 33 PAST SIMPLE learn learnt estudar; aprender leave left deixar; largar; sair let let deixar; permitir lose lost perder make made fazer; criar; causar; tornar pay paid pagar put put colocar; pôrread read ler run ran correr; fugir 34 PAST SIMPLE say said dizer see saw ver; observar sell sold vender sing sang cantar sleep slept dormir; descansar speak spoke falar; dizer spend spent gastar; tirar; perceber; divertir-se; passar (tempo) steal stole roubar; furtar swim swam nadar 35 PAST SIMPLE teach taught ensinar; educar tell told contar think thought pensar; acreditar throw threw jogar (sentido de lançar algo) win won vencer; ganhar write wrote escrever; anotar; compor 36 Agora, veja alguns exemplos de construções feitas com verbos irregulares no Past Simple: a. PAST SIMPLE 39 PAST SIMPLE: NEGATIVE FORM Observe o seguinte excerto do diálogo do inicio de nossa aula: “We didn’t want to go out” PAST SIMPLE 40 Aqui, temos a forma negativa do verbo want. Nessa forma, temos o verbo auxiliar “did”, contraído com a partícula negativa “not”. PAST SIMPLE 44 PAST SIMPLE Affirmative form Negative form (long form) Negative form (short form/contractions) I want I did not want I didn’t want You want You did not want You didn’t want He wants He did not want He didn’t want She wants She did not want She didn’t want It wants It did not want It didn’t want We want We did not want We didn’t want You want You did not want You didn’t want They want They did not want They didn’t want 45 PAST SIMPLE Affirmative form Negative form (long form) Negative form (short form/contractions) I thought I did not think I didn’t think You though You did not think You didn’t think He thought He did not think He didn’t think She thought She did not think She didn’t think It thought It did not think It didn’t think We thought We did not think We didn’t think You thought You did not think You didn’t think They thought They did not think They didn’t think 46 Quando você usa o verbo auxiliar “did”, (assim como os auxiliares “do” e “does”), o verbo principal fica na forma básica, e não no Past Simple. Seguem alguns exemplos de construções no Past Simple, na forma negativa: PAST SIMPLE 47 a. I didn’t like to wear flip-flops when I was a child. b. He didn’t learn Math at school. He learnt at college. c. The computer didn’t work in the morning, but now it’s OK. PAST SIMPLE 48 d. You didn’t come to class yesterday, but I got the homework for you. e. Lydia didn’t go to the movies last weekend because she had a test on Monday. f. They didn’t speak English when they moved to England. PAST SIMPLE 49 g. Our mother didn’t keep a journal when she was a teenager. h. Alice and Toby didn’t have their own house when they got married. i. Lia and I didn’t do the exercises so our teacher was angry. PAST SIMPLE 50 PAST SIMPLE: INTERROGATIVE FORM Observe o exemplo do nosso diálogo: What did you and Elif do? Did you eat the meal I made for lunch? b. Did Bruno and you sleep well last night? c. Did Mary work a lot yesterday? PAST SIMPLE 55 d. Did they close the front door after they went out? e. Did you learn how to swim when you were a child? f. Did Patricia and Anna drink enough water before going to the gym? PAST SIMPLE 56 g. Did you ride a motorcycle when you were a teenager? h. Did he teach English before he became a singer? i. Did you move to Orlando after the hurricane? Assim, no Past Simple, o padrão de respostas das yes/no questions deve conter “did”, conforme apresentamos no quadro que segue: PAST SIMPLE 58 PAST SIMPLE Short answers Did I …? Yes, I did. No, I did not./No, I didn’t. Did you …? Yes, I did. No, I did not./No, I didn’t. Did he…? Yes, he did. No, he did not./No, he didn’t. Did she…? Yes, she did. No, she did not./No, she didn’t. Did it…? Observe: PAST SIMPLE 60 Affirmative: John ate a hamburger yesterday. Negative: John didn’t eat a hamburger yesterday. Interrogative: Did John eat a hamburger yesterday? PAST SIMPLE 61 Affirmative: Mary worked on Wednesday. Negative: Mary did not work on Wednesday. Interrogative: Did Mary work on Wednesday? PAST SIMPLE 62 Affirmative: You sang at the pub last night. Negative: Karen didn’t lose ten kilos in the last two months. Interrogative: Did Karen lose ten kilos in the last two months? PAST SIMPLE 66 I saw a movie yesterday (Eu vi um filme ontem). Last year, I didn't travel to India (Ano passado, eu não viajei para a Índia). Did you have dinner last night? (Você jantou noite passada?) PAST SIMPLE 67 She washed her hair in the morning (Ela lavou seu cabelo pela manhã). Exemplos: PAST SIMPLE 69 a. I finished work, walked to the park and found a nice place to rest (Eu terminei o trabalho, caminhei para o parque e encontrei um bom lugar para descansar). b.He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00 (Ele chegou do aeroporto às 8h, deu entrada no hotel às 9h e encontrou com os outros às 10h). Essa duração é frequentemente indicada por expressões como for two years (por dois anos), for five minutes (por cinco minutos), all day (o dia inteiro), all year (o ano inteiro) etc. Exemplos: PAST SIMPLE 71 a. I lived in Brazil for two years (Eu vivi no Brasil por dois anos). b.Sally studied French for five years (Sally estudou francês por cinco anos). c.They swam in the pool all day (Eles nadaram na piscina o dia todo). Exemplos: PAST SIMPLE 74 a.I studied English when I was a child (Eu estudei/estudava inglês quando eu era criança). b. He usually played the violin at night (Ele usualmente tocava violino à noite). c. He always worked at the bakery after school (Ele sempre trabalhava na padaria depois da escola). PAST SIMPLE 75 d.They never went to school, they always skipped classes (Eles nunca iam à escola, eles sempre “matavam” aula). Exemplos: PAST SIMPLE 77 a.Marion was shy as a child, but now she is very outgoing (Marion era tímida quando criança, mas agora ela é muito extrovertida). b. He didn't like beer before (Ele não gostava de cerveja antes). c.Internet was much slower in the past (A Internet era muito mais lenta no passado). PAST SIMPLE 80 PAST SIMPLE Past time expression Translation Yesterday Ontem Last week Semana passada Last month Mês passado Last year Ano passado Before Antes Once upon a time Era uma vez; em algum tempo; momento do passado Ten years ago Dez anos atrás Six days ago Seis dias atrás Twenty minutes ago Vinte minutos atrás The day before O dia anterior A long time ago/Long ago Há muito tempo That day/month/year Aquele dia/mês/ano 81 More examples: “I kept quite still and said nothing. For a whole hour I did not move a muscle, and in the meantime I did not hear him lie down. He was still sitting up in the bed listening (...)”. (POE, E. A. The Telltale heart.
