Origins
Arrival of Maori
Kupe comes from Hawaiki, believed to be a Polynisian island because there are distinct similarities between the Maori language and culture and others of Polynesia including the Cook Islands, Hawaii, and Tahiti.
The Moriori, another Polynesian tribe, lived there until 1933.
These tribes named the land Aotearoa, meaning “the land of the long white cloud”.
