VERB GET
UNDERSTANDING “GET”
• This verb has many uses in English, that’s why we can’t give it only
one definition or translation.
• We are going to explore the different meanings of “get”.
• When we know how to use this verb, we can put it in a sentence
with more confidence.
• It’s a very useful verb. Let’s explore!
FORMS OF THE VERB GET
• Simple present: GET.
• Third person: GETS.
• Simple past: GOT.
• Present Continuous: GETTING.
• Past participle: GOTTEN or GOT.
• Simple future: WILL GET.
RECEIVING
• The first meaning of “get” is to receive, obtain or gain something.
• Examples:
• I got a letter last week.
• If we ask the teacher, maybe we will get permission.
• What kind of gift have you got?
BUYING
• We can use “get” to say that we buy something.
• Examples:
• Did you get a new apartment yesterday?
• She is getting new clothes with her sister right now.
• I really want to get a new car!
ACHIEVING SOMETHING
• When somebody achieves a goal or reaches a place, “get” is very
appropriate!

• You can replace the verb “arrive” for “get”.

understand something:

• He told me a joke but I didn’t get it.

BECOMING OR STARTING TO BE
• When something or someone is starting to be or becoming
another thing.
• Examples:
• It’s getting really cold, you have to get the flu vaccine.
• Cars have gotten more expensive.
• She got really different after her plastic surgery.
FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS
• You can use “get” to talk about feelings.
• Examples:
• I get very happy when I see you.
• He got upset because he was fired.
• Please, don’t get sad! You need to try again.
