There are two basic types of optical fiber: multimode fiber and single-
mode fiber. Multimode fiber was the first type to be
commercialized. Its core is much larger than that of single-mode
fiber, allowing hundreds of rays (modes) of light to move through the
fiber simultaneously. Single-mode fibers have a much smaller core,
and they are better at retaining the fidelity of each light pulse over
longer distances.
