Episode 25 Rebecca Remembers PART 1 1 ON THE PLANE—AFTERNOON 2 NARRATOR Rebecca Casey is flying from San Francisco, home to Boston. She is very 3 worried and upset. She has just learned that her father is in a hospital. 4 At the Mendozas’ party 5 REBECCA What is it? 6 NANCY SHAW It’s your father. He’s in the hospital. 7 REBECCA I have to call home. My father’s in the hospital. May I use your phone? 8 RAMON Of course. There’s a phone in the kitchen. It’ll be quieter there. 9 ON THE PLANE 10 NARRATOR When she telephoned the hospital, she knew she had to return at once. The 11 situation was serious. 12 On the phone in the Mendozas’ kitchen 13 REBECCA Oh, my God! Is he OK? Well, what did the doctor say? I will. . . I’ll. . . I’ll take 14 the next flight out. 15 NARRATOR She was sorry to interrupt the Mendozas’ retirement party. It was a wonderful 16 celebration for a wonderful family—Mr. and Mrs. Mendoza, the guests of honor; 17 Ramón and his son, Alex; and, of course, Alberto. PART 2 18 ON THE PLANE 19 NARRATOR Rebecca’s thoughts about her father mix with thoughts about her life in San 20 Francisco. 21 At Nancy Shaw’s house 22 NARRATOR Her new home at Nancy Shaw’s house. 23 NANCY SHAW (holding up a glass) Here’s to the beginning of a new life. 24 Bill and Rebecca at school 25 NARRATOR Classes and friends at music school. 26 At the after-school program with Emma Washington 27 NARRATOR Her new job. 28 EMMA WASHINGTON Great, I need to see what you can do. You can take over the softball 29 practice today. . . right now, in fact.. . OK. Let me introduce you to the 30 children. 31 Rebecca and Alberto walking into the sunset 32 NARRATOR Exciting times with Alberto. 33 Rebecca and Alberto at the gallery 34 REBECCA Oh, my gosh. It’s me. 35 ALBERTO Well, what do you think? 36 At the Wangs’ apartment 37 NARRATOR A new friendship with the Wang family. 38 MRS. WANG (handing Rebecca a vase) Please, for you. 39 REBECCA Oh, it’s beautiful. But I.. . I can’t accept this. 40 MRS. WANG (to Vincent) Vincent. . . (speaking in Chinese) 41 VINCENT My mom said she wants you to have it. 42 REBECCA Thank you very much, Mrs. Wang. 43 On the steps at Emma Washington’s after-school program 44 NARRATOR Caring for Alex. 45 REBECCA Alex, who’s picking you up? 46 ALEX My dad. How come you have books? 47 REBECCA Oh, I go to school too. I have a lot of homework tonight. 48 ALEX I have a big test tomorrow. 49 REBECCA Uh-oh, what’s it on? 50 ALEX Spelling. 51 REBECCA Do you want me to help you study while you’re waiting for your dad? 52 ALEX OK. 53 Sitting outside with Ramón 54 NARRATOR And getting to know Ramón. 55 RAMON By the way, I hope you save a dance for me. 56 REBECCA I have to warn you, I don’t dance very well. 57 RAMON Don’t worry, I only do the slow ones. But I can teach you some Latin dances. 58 REBECCA I’d like that. PART 3 59 ON THE PLANE 60 NARRATOR All of it was overwhelming. Did she neglect her family in Boston? Did she miss 61 signs that something was wrong? 62 Dad and Rebecca on the phone 63 DAD (coughing) How are you? 64 REBECCA Are you all right? 65 DAD I’m fine. Just a frog in my throat. So, how’s school? 66 REBECCA School? It’s pretty tough, Dad. It’s a lot of work. 67 In the Casey apartment 68 NARRATOR She remembered her father never really wanted her to go to San Francisco. 69 DAD So, what do you want from me? 70 REBECCA Just your approval. 71 DAD (spelling) N-O. No way. 72 In Rebecca’s room in Boston 73 NARRATOR But in the end he supported her because he loved her. 74 DAD If you ever need help, change your mind, or anything, remember we’re here. 75 REBECCA Thanks, Dad. Thanks for everything. I love you. 76 DAD Ah. . . well ah.. . I’ll miss ya, God knows. 77 Sandy and Rebecca at work 78 SANDY Oh, my gosh. They accepted you. The San Francisco College of Music. Oh, 79 Rebecca, I’m so happy for you. 80 Rebecca playing softball with her Boston team 81 REBECCA All right, Mary! 82 NARRATOR Her best friend, Sandy, was excited for her. And her brother supported her 83 decision to go to music school, too. 84 Sandy and Kevin in the ballpark 85 SANDY You’re going to miss her, aren’t you? 86 Kevin and Rebecca at home in their kitchen in Boston 87 REBECCA The truth…Is it all right with you if I go? 88 NARRATOR They knew it was her dream. 89 KEVIN Go for it! 90 ON THE PLANE 91 NARRATOR And now her brother is alone with her sick father in a hospital room in Boston. 92 Why did she ever leave her father and her brother?
