Este livro foi montado pensando em dar um método e 
exercícios para quem quer aprender a ler inglês. Em particular, tem 
um foco para os alunos de Sri Chinmoy que queiram aprender a ler 
a sua obra, pois é a maior parte dos escritos e vocabulário deste livro 
– mas na verdade serve para qualquer pessoa aprender a ler inglês. 
Nas páginas iniciais, deixamos as dicas sobre como aprender 
a ler inglês, em artigos e comentários. O texto principal do livro é 
tradução e original de Sri Chinmoy. 
Você perceberá sendo que o texto em inglês está copiado 
duas vezes. Utilize-os assim: 
1) Leia o texto com espaçamento duplo, fazendo 
anotações na página, palavras que consultou no 
dicionário, etc. Se não compreender mesmo usando o 
dicionário, ou sinta falta da nuance da frase, leia o 
texto em português. 
2) Depois, leia o texto com espaçamento normal, 
tentando lembrar as palavras que aprendeu. Se 
esqueceu de alguma, volte no texto de espaço duplo 
com as suas anotações e relembre o significado. 
Retorne ao texto sem espaçamento e continue a 
leitura.

3) Repita essa mesma leitura, no início todos os dias, 
depois a cada 3 dias, e depois a cada semana, até ter 
decorado todas as palavras e expressões e possa ler o 
texto normalmente. 
4) Adicione novos textos deste livro à medida que tenha 
tempo para estudar mais diariamente, e que os textos 
que já estudou se tornaram mais rápidos de se ler. 
Tente estudar o quanto for possível por dia, mas, ao mesmo 
tempo, a consistência é o mais importante. Se vai estudar 30 
minutos por dia, estude todos os dias 30 minutos, durante um ano. 
Se vai estudar uma hora por dia, estude uma hora por dia, durante 
um ano. Nos capítulos seguintes vou explicar a teoria por traz disso. 
Consistência é uma das chaves. Interesse é outra. Foi 
assim que eu aprendi a ler inglês. Usando o dicionário e esforço. 
A língua inglesa é generosa e se deixa aprender facilmente por quem 
tem ambos. Todas as traduções deste livro são minhas.

give a gift to India for which India will remain eternally, eternally, 
eternally grateful to England and that gift is the English language. 
The English language is India's matchless treasure. If an Indian in 
India goes 60 or 80 miles from his home, he may find people who

200 miles away, he will not be able to understand anything! Does a 
Bengali understand even one word of Telegu? Does a Tamil know

that I use which are not to be found in any Bengali dictionary. 
Calcutta Bengalis will laugh at our Chittagong dialect! So in that 
way, the English language has saved us. It has given us a common 
language to unite us on a national level and, on the international 
level, it has enabled us to participate in the international 
community.

Hindi, but they do speak English. So English saves us.

It will be no exaggeration to say that by virtue of the English 
language alone India stands in the vanguard of the political history

As each individual has a distinct place to fill in the world, 
even so every language has an important role. And it has been an 
established fact that no other European tongue has so much power 
of assimilating elements from foreign languages as does the English 
language. 
The English language was brought into Britain by Teutonic 
invaders. These invaders were of three types: Jutes, Saxons and 
Angles. Modern English has undergone a considerable change. It is 
no more the language brought into Britain by the Saxons and the 
Angles. 
Grimm, a German linguist, writes in his famous book On 
the Origin of Languagesthat “English possesses a veritable power of 
expression such as perhaps never stood at the command of any other 
language of men. Its highly spiritual genius and wonderfully happy

development and condition have resulted from a surprisingly 
intimate union of the two noblest languages in modern Europe, the 
Teutonic and the Roman.” 
Not only in his boyhood, but also in the prime of his youth, 
while his feet were touching the alien shores, Vivekananda’s ruthless 
contempt for England was almost unbelievable. As regards the 
English national life, a strong suspicion was then haunting his mind. 
To quote him: “No one ever landed on English soil with 
more hatred in his heart for a race than I did for the English.” But 
with what result? He had to revise his feeling overnight. In the 
following lines we shall observe his excessive love for England 
disclosed by himself before a multitude of people at Calcutta: 
“There is none among you here present, my brothers, who 
loves the English people more that I do now.” We may as well ask 
him why and how could the English have won his heart? His 
immediate reply is: “The more I lived among them, saw how the 
machine was working — the English national life — and mixed with 
them, I found where the heartbeat of the nation was, and the more 
I love them.”

Como aprender inglês 
 
 
Question: What is the quickest way to learn the language of 
a different country? 
Sri Chinmoy: The quickest way to learn the language of a 
different country is to love the soul of that particular country. Then 
you have to love the heart of that country and finally you have to 
love the consciousness of that country. When the consciousness, 
heart and soul of the country are loved, immediately the outer 
vehicle of the country — which is language — tries to befriend the 
student who wants to learn it.

livro 3 ou 4 vezes como você disse, pois são poucos o que tem tal

was thirty-six year of age he began to learn a new language. We find 
him writing to Josephine MacLeod in 1899: ‘Now I am going to 
study French if you give me a lesson every day; but no grammar 
business—only I will read and you explain in English.’ … In March 
1900 he writes again to Mary Hale that he expected to meet friends 
in Paris soon ‘. . . and parler francaise! I am getting by heart a French

When I was about four years old, my eldest sister, Arpita, 
saw that I had no interest in learning the letters of the Bengali 
alphabet. So she began to teach me the letters of the English 
alphabet. I liked them very much, but when my mother discovered 
what Arpita was teaching me, she was so displeased. She wanted me 
to learn my mother tongue first. She did not care for the English 
language at all, although my father had a very good command of 
English, and his immediate bosses were all Englishmen.

There are two reasons why most of my songs are written in 
Bengali. One reason is that I am a Bengali and I know Bengali 
infinitely better than I know English. But if I am in a divine mood, 
I will call this a silly reason. The real reason is that the English 
language, although we say it has tremendous majesty, at the same 
time has become the commercial language. If you want to be 
generous, you can say it has become the universal language. The 
English language undoubtedly has universal appeal on the practical 
plane, but it does not have that universal appeal on the inner plane, 
the spiritual plane, whereas Bengali has it. Italian also has the soul’s 
approach. We can say it has a very free access, like Bengali, to the 
soul. But the English language does not have this. Of course, if 
somebody has written an exceptionally soulful prayer or poem, thesesoulful words will have an approach to the soul’s reality. But on the 
whole the language does not have an immediate appeal to the soul. 
It will appeal to our mind, to our vital and to our aspiring physical. 
The Bengali language outwardly is sweeter, much sweeter, 
than the English language. It has to its credit an inner reality, let us 
say a divine reality, a very subtle, haunting reality which the English 
language, unfortunately, lacks. The English language has many, 
many good qualities, but the immediate inner approach to the soul, 
to the inner reality, the sweetness and the heart quality of oneness 
you don’t get in English as immediately or as powerfully as you get 
it in Bengali. This is my yogic reason. 
Right now, believe it or not, English comes to me more 
freely than Bengali… People say that thoughts always come in the 
mother tongue first, even when you know quite a few languages. I 
have heard this many times. In my case, this was true many years 
ago. But for the last six or seven years when I write, give talks or 
answer questions, I never, never think in Bengali. I don’t get the

words or ideas in Bengali first and then immediately translate them. 
Everything comes to me directly in English. It may be incorrect, it 
may be imperfect English, but the ideas and words definitely come 
to me in English. 
… English has its own strengths in many ways … When it 
is a matter of soulful reality existence, Bengali far surpasses English. 
But when it is for universal appeal, or on the practical plane, the 
commercial plane, the physical plane, vital plane and mental plane, 
English undoubtedly has a wider scope.

Esforçando-se para aprender 
 
Aprenda inglês como o Secretário Geral da ONU, Ban Ki 
Moon: Durante a guerra da Coréia, quando era criança, eles 
escaparam de boa parte das batalhes e bombardeios mas, segundo 
Ban, estavam pobres e famintos. Quando voltou para uma das 
escolas bombardeadas, ele se sentava no chão de terra da escola, 
estudando assim até que as escolas fossem reconstruídas. Ban 
aprendeu inglês sozinho, em parte ao ouvir os soldados americanos 
durante a guerra e com os americanos que estavam construindo uma 
fábrica de fertilizantes nas proximidades. Em 1956, quando tinha 
12 anos, foi selecionado por seus colegas de turma para escrever uma 
carta ao Secretário Geral da ONU, Dag Hammarskjold… Ainda no 
ensino médio, venceu um concurso de escrita em inglês patrocinado 
pela Cruz Vermelha americana… O prêmio foi uma viagem aos 
Estados Unidos, com a estadia junto a uma família americana em 
San Francisco.

Segue a minha forma para quem quer aprender inglês, Fiz 
bem resumida, e cada frase escrita aqui tem valor no processo de 
aprendizado. Foi assim que eu aprendi, mas levei mais tempo, pois 
não tinha essas dicas. Eu só tinha vontade. Queria ler, mas não 
conseguia. Foi um esforço bruto de repetição, sem nenhum 
conhecimento prévio e nenhuma facilidade natural, e sem nenhum 
método para me orientar.

Ler, Escrever, Ouvir, Falar Inglês 
 
Aprenda só a ler. Ler os livros de Sri Chinmoy para os seus 
alunos é provavelmente o mais importante uso da língua inglesa. 
Sabendo ler, depois você aprende a falar e escrever bem mais rápido. 
Se não souber o significado da palavra, nunca irá usá-la numa 
conversa, nunca irá entendê-la se a ouvir, e nunca conseguirá 
escrevê-la num texto. Então primeiro a leitura.

Gramática E Estrutura Das Frases Do Inglês 
 
Uma boa notícia é que, falando de línguas mundiais, o 
português e o inglês são praticamente idênticos. A gramática e 
estrutura de frases do inglês é quase igual à do português para quem 
quer ler e compreender um texto. Normalmente, bem mais simples. 
Então a gente já conhece o grosso da gramática e estrutura do inglês 
simplesmente por termos nascido no Brasil. Com o inglês já que 
aprendemos na escola, sabendo o tempo verbal (passado: “…-ed”, 
futuro “will …”, etc, que são iguais no português também), já dá pra 
entender quase tudo. 
 
A perfeição é inimiga da velocidade. O importante é 
entender. Não precisa entender 100%. Você vai continuar 
melhorando contanto que comece.

Vocabulário De Língua Inglesa 
 
Moleza. O inglês possui muitas palavras que vieram do 
latim. O português também. Então já sabemos uma boa parte do 
vocabulário do inglês simplesmente por termos nascido no Brasil. 
Por exemplo: meditação é meditation. Quer mais fácil que isso?

Palavras desconhecidas. O resto das palavras podemos 
procurar no dicionário quando as encontrarmos. Cada palavra tem 
mais de um significado, e, ao passar por elas várias vezes nos textos, 
entenderemos naturalmente qual o significado mais natural no caso. 
Dica: ponha orelhas (A, B, C, D, …Z) no seu dicionário 
para economizar tempo nas buscas. Dica auxiliar: imprima este livro 
e tenha um dicionário físico, impresso. É um fato que aprender 
qualquer coisa no computador é mais difícil que num livro de papel. 
Curioso: se você acha difícil procurar palavras no dicionário, 
tente aprender japonês e procurar alguma palavra num dicionário de 
japonês, por exemplo 綺麗. Provavelmente vai lhe custar uma hora 
para aprender como usar um dicionáriode japonês, e você se 
deparará com várias pronúncias diferentes para ela (sem saber qual 
usar), além de duas formas de escrever奇麗 e綺麗. Alguns 
significados possíveis são: limpo, transparente, belo, organizado, 
inteiramente, gracioso, reluzente, bem educado, justo, puro. A não 
ser que a palavra faça parte de um nome de pessoa, onde o 
significado muda de novo, a pronúncia muda de novo e você precisa 
comprar um dicionário só de nomes para aprender a ler nomes 
japoneses, que mudam de leitura e significado depois de algumas 
décadas (por exemplo, o nome de alguém que nasceu em 1950 pode 
estar com uma leitura errada num dicionário editado em 2000). Que 
tal – inglês é fácil, né? 
 
Importante: memorizando o vocabulário. Cada vez que 
procurar uma palavra desconhecida, escreva ela neste livro junto 
com um dos significados. No dia seguinte, é imprescindível você ir 
ler o original sem anotações e tentar lembrar do significado em

inglês. Se você lembrar vários dias seguidos do significado, quer 
dizer que aprendeu a palavra. Se não lembrar, quer dizer que tem 
que olhar nas suas anotações para reaprender e continuar o processo 
de tentar lembrar por mais dias. Continue o processo com essa 
palavra até conseguir lembrar sem consultar o significado. Quando 
lembrar dela com facilidade, você não precisa mais fazer isso e terá 
mais tempo para aprender outras palavras. 
 
Paciência até o “ponto de virada”. No começo de qualquer 
projeto, não vemos os resultados. Eles levam tempo, mas depois 
começam a vir com uma velocidade cada vez mais rápida. Quando 
se der conta, estará “mais para lá do que para cá”, ou seja, estará 
sabendo mais inglês do que não sabendo, o que quer dizer que não 
tem mais volta – você aprendeu inglês.

Fala, Audição E Escrita 
 
Imersão. Temos a sorte de que quase tudo o que 
procuramos, livros, manuais, filmes, etc, está em inglês. Aproveite 
para ir aprendendo a língua enquanto faz outras atividades. 
Configure seus equipamentos, telefone, computador, livros, filmes, 
etc, sempre para o inglês. Isso é importante para você aprender a 
saber as nuances de cada palavra. Por exemplo, em português 
dizemos por exemplo que “algo é bonito”, mas também reclamamos, 
“que bonito, heim!?” Você aprende a diferenciar com a vivência no

Pronúncia. Diferente do português, a pronúncia das 
palavras do inglês é bem irregular, e tem diversas formas de 
pronunciar a mesma palavra de acordo com a região do mundo onde 
você está. Você vai aprendendo ao ouvir os outros e se corrigir. 
 
Aprendendo a falar, ouvir e escrever. Você vai melhorar 
essas capacidades quando tiver vocabulário suficiente e bem 
consolidado. Aí o processo é o mesmo que com a leitura. Falar frases, 
escrever frases, ouvir frases, corrigir, repetir.

Tempo Necessário Para Aprender 
 
Menos de 1 ano. Para aprender em particular a ler a língua 
inglesa, que é um idioma dentre os mais fáceis do mundo (lembro de 
uma gravação de Sri Chinmoy dizendo algo como “the English 
language is generous.”), em particular para quem já fala português, 
imagino que o tempo levado vai ser algo menor do que ano se você 
se esforçar de verdade. Se não se esforçar, aí você vai multiplicando: 
5 anos, 15 anos, mas provavelmente você já vai ter desistido antes. 
 
Como não desistir. Coloque como uma prioridade na vida 
e se dedique. Quanto mais estudar, mais progresso fará e menor será 
a chance de desistir no meio do caminho. Quando se der conta,

 Meditation is not an escape. Meditation is the acceptance of life in 
its totality, with a view to transforming it for the highest 
manifestation of the divine Truth here on earth. 
 
Meditation is absolutely necessary for those who want to have a 
better and more fulfilling life. If you feel that you are satisfied with 
what you have and what you are, then you need not enter into the 
field of meditation. But if you feel that there is a barren desert deep 
inside your heart, then I wish to say that meditation is the answer. 
Meditation will give you inner joy and peace of mind. Meditation 
will never take you away from your parents, from your children, 
from your family. Far from it. Only it will strengthen your

connection with your dear ones, because inside them you will see the 
very existence of God. 
If you wish to develop your talents or increase your capacity in any 
field, then I wish to say that it is obligatory to follow some inner

nothing on earth that cannot be improved through spirituality and 
meditation. 
If you want to simplify your life, meditation is the answer. If you 
want to fulfil your life, meditation is the answer. If you want to have 
joy and offer joy to the world at large, then meditation is the only

If you meditate to forget your suffering or to forget your difficulties,

day and every second to enter into your highest divinity, where the 
finite is completely lost in the Infinite. The finite existence which 
you have and which you are, can easily be lost in the infinite and 
become totally one with the infinite if you meditate. This is what

field, then I wish to say that it is obligatory to follow some inner 
discipline. If you are a singer but you wish to sing infinitely better, if 
you aspire, I tell you, your voice will become far better. There is 
nothing on earth that cannot be improved through spirituality and 
meditation. 
If you want to simplify your life, meditation is the answer. If you 
want to fulfil your life, meditation is the answer. If you want to have 
joy and offer joy to the world at large, then meditation is the only 
answer. 
If you meditate to forget your suffering or to forget your difficulties, 
then you are not meditating for the right reason. But if you are

A poesia que brota de um coração devoto leva corações afins 
ao sempre-doce Uno e faz deles uma República com Ele como 
presidente. Nenhuma outra faculdade tem talvez um poder maior 
de transcendência dos limites ao ilimitável. Nos dias reluzentes que 
despertam na Terra, poderemos bem procurar pelo fermento da 
poesia transcendental para elevar a massa humana como um todo. 
Ao invés de intentar substituir um desejo por outro melhor, 
é de valia tentar um desejo transcendente, para que, num transe, 
possa intuir Aquele que ouve o chamado do seu coração e está 
sempre pronto a oferecer a Sua Mão auxiliadora. 
Quando homens adoram Deus com a esperança de ter suas 
tristezas removidas, eles podem encontrar frustração e perder a fé 
em Deus.

Ralph Waldo Emerson 
 
A thinker in the sublimest sense of the term is Emerson. His 
philosophy touches the core of all earthly problems. "Ends," said he, 
"pre-exist in the means." Hence what matters is to cherish our 
highest aspirations in all sincerity and determination and rest 
assured in the faith that these will realise themselves. 
He came of poor parents, but had an indomitable will and 
an utter self-reliance. Strangely enough, he was taught from within 
to be cheerful in the face of poverty. His father, William Emerson, 
a clergyman, passed away when Waldo was a boy of eight. Soon 
afterwards, the family was thrown into extreme poverty. It came to 
such a pass that Emerson and his elder brother had to share a single 
overcoat to help them through the terrible winter. Obviously one of 
them had to stay indoors while the other was out — and who but 
the younger of the two was the unfortunate one? Waldo missed the

attractions, affections and amusements of the outside world; but at 
the same time this isolation gave him an opportunity to plunge into 
the sea of knowledge. Voraciously he studied. Plato's Dialogues and

within, he welcomed Spinoza and Montaigne along with his 
previous masters. 
He had many antagonists. Hypocrisy and superstition were 
the worst of them. He fought and fought them, but success 
remained a far cry. He had also numerous friends. Truth and 
sincerity topped their ranks. 
America, the fairest land of freedom, opportunity and 
progress, inspired in Emerson the thought that his countrymen 
should utilise all her divine gifts to strive for the most divine aims of 
life. Indeed, America will gain her true stature when she lives up to 
her philosopher-son's towering aspirations.

 Our student must have a style and determination, and be 
a master in his own speciality. But having this, he must put it behind 
him. He must have a catholicity, a power to see with a free and 
disengaged look every object.

useful unit not only of the American nation but of the world-family
