1st QUESTION (It carries 10,0 marks – 10 items)
Read text I and answer questions 1.1 to 1.4 in English, based on it
Genetics
Many attempts have been made in the History to explain the similarity between parents and children.
People thought, for example, that the substances responsible for heredity came from the blood of both parents and were mixed together in the child. This idea can be found in expressions like “royal blood” or “bloodline”. Another theory suggested the existence of a miniature copy of the father in his reproductive cells. But we know, today, that heredity is carried by the genes, which are chromosome sectors transmitted from parents to children.
The basic laws of heredity are studied by Genetics. These laws were stated by the Augustinian monk Gregor Jonathan Mendel (1822-1884) in a monastery in the city of Brünn, Austria (now a Czech territory).
Mendel used peas in his experiments because they could be easily observed. Mendel’s experiment demonstrated that the gametes (ovule and pollen grain in plants, egg cells and spermatozoa in animals) contain some factors (genes) that are responsible for the appearance of characters in the organism. When fertilization occurs, the genes carried by the male are combined with those carried by the female. The new plant inherits half of its genes from each parent.
1.1)The text affirms that “This idea” can be found in expressions like “royal blood” or “bloodline”. Which idea is it? (1,0 mark)
1.2)Why did Mendel use peas in his experiments? (1,0 mark)

1.3)When do the male genes combine with the female genes? (1,0 mark)
1.4)What does the new plant inherit from each parent? (1,0 mark)
Answer questions 1.5 to 1.7, in English, based on text II below.
The right word in the right place
The use of can to ask for permission is common and perfectly correct in informal language nowadays, but some people do not agree. To those purists may is the right word to ask for permission, while can is the correct one to express ability.
This reminds me of a story about George Bernard Shaw, the great Irish playwright. He once received a telegram from a group of young actors in which they asked for Shaw’s permission to present one of his plays. But the young man who wrote the telegram was not very careful in his choice of words. Shaw opened the telegram and read, “Can we present your Pygmalion?” It was clear that they intended to ask for the author’s permission, but Shaw was not satisfied. For him, the old master of words, can is the right word to express ability, not permission. Shaw’s answer was quick and full of irony. He immediately sent a telegram to the young actors, saying, “You may, but you probably cannot”.
1.5)What was the clear intention of the young actors? (1,0 mark)
1.6)Was the young man careful in his choice of words? Why? (1,0 mark)

1.7)Why wasn’t Shaw satisfied? (1,0 mark)
