É usado tanto para o singular quanto para o plural, para os gêneros masculino, feminino, comum e neutro. Equivale a: o, a, os, as. Masculino The boy, the boys O menino, os meninos Feminino The girl, the girls A menina, as meninas Comum The pupil, the pupils O aluno, a aluna, os alunos, as alunas Neutro The table, the tables A mesa, as mesas O artigo INDEFINIDO “an” e “a” não varia em gênero e é usado antes do substantivo no singular. Equivale a: um, uma, uns, umas. An emprega-se antes de som vocálico (vogal). An apple, an hour (uma maçã, uma hora). A emprega-se antes de som consonantal (consoante). A country, a hero (um país, um herói). (Nós olhamos para ele) POSSESSIVOS ADJETIVOS: antecedem o substantivo. Where is my pencil? (Onde está meu lápis?) Our books are open. (Nossos livros estão abertos) POSSESSIVOS SUBSTANTIVOS: quando o substantivo não é expresso. Whose hat is this? It is mine. (De quem é este chapéu? É meu) REFLEXIVO: é reflexivo e enfático. He hurt himself. (Ele se feriu; Ele feriu a si próprio) He read the letter himself. Pronomes 2 DEMONSTRATIVOS This = este, esta, isto. These = estes, estas. That = esse, essa, aquele, aquela, isso, aquilo. Those = esses, essas, aqueles, aquelas. Como pronome demonstrativo adjetivo (precede o substantivo): This boy is writing. (Este menino está escrevendo) These books are mine. (Estes livros são meus) That girl is reading. (Aquela menina está lendo) Those children are playing. (Aquelas crianças estão brincando) Como pronome demonstrativo substantivo (fica no lugar do substantivo): Who is this? (Quem é este?) What is this? (Que é isto?) These are the books he bought. (Estes são os livros que ele comprou) Do you agree to that? (Você concorda com isso?) Whose are those? (Quem são aqueles?) INTERROGATIVOS Who = quem (para pessoas) Who is that man? (Quem é aquele homem?) What = que (para pessoas e coisas) What is he? (O que ele é?) What books did he read? (Que livros ele leu) Which = qual (é seletivo; para pessoas e coisas) Which pupil wrote this? (Qual aluno escreveu isto?) Which book did you choose? (Qual livro você escolheu?) Whose = de quem (para pessoas e coisas) Whose daughter is she? (De quem ela é filha?) INDEFINIDOS Os pronomes indefinidos são formados pelas palavras some, any e no. Significam algum, alguma, alguns, algumas, nenhum, nenhuma. SOME – utilizado em frases afirmativas I have some books. = Eu tenho alguns livros. ANY – utilizado em frases negativas e interrogativas Do you have any book? = Você tem algum livro? I don´t have any books. = Eu não tenho nenhum livro. NO – utilizado em frases negativas I have no books. = Eu não tenho nenhum livro. Adjetivos Em inglês, os adjetivos ocorrem de forma diferente. Eles estarão sempre no singular, e aparecerão nas frases antes dos substantivos, e nunca depois. Exemplos: He bought a new car. They have three new cars. She has a beautiful dog. She has beautiful dogs. Plural de Substantivos Em inglês, assim como no português, existem regras para a construção do plural dos substantivos. Também temos algumas irregularidades. Fica assim: Que dia é hoje? Hoje é dia 19 de setembro. What day is today? Today is September 19th. Quando é seu aniversário? Meu aniversário é no dia 3 de Março. When is your birthday? My birthday is on March 3rd. Para falar as horas em Inglês usamos até o número 12. Não existem horários como 13:00, 14:00, etc. Para diferenciarmos manhã e tarde utilizamos: a.m. (anti meridien) = da meia-noite ao meio-dia. p.m. (post meridien) = do meio-dia à meia-noite. Que horas são? São 3 horas da tarde. What time is it? It´s 3 pm. A que horas você dorme? Eu durmo ás 10:00 da noite. At what time do you sleep? I sleep at 10 p.m. TIME 2:00 It’s two o’clock. 2:05 It’s five past two. 2:15 It’s a quarter past two. 2:30 It’s half past two. 2:40 It’s twenty to three. 2:45 It’s a quarter to three. COMO SE PERGUNTA AS HORAS What time is it? (Que horas são?) What is the time? (Qual é a hora?) Have you got the time? (Você tem horas?) Do you have the times? (Você tem as horas? 1. SÓ CONSIDERA 12 HORAS. PARA DIFERENCIAR USA-SE: a.m. - anti meridien (antes do meio-dia) p.m. - anti meridien (após o meio-dia) 2. PARA HORAS CHEIAS USA-SE: o’clock 6:00 = It’s six o’clock 8:00 = It’s eight o’clock 8:01 = It’s one past eight 3. PARA QUINZE MINUTOS USA-SE: quarter 6:15 = It’s quarter past six 8:15 = It’s quarter past eight 6:45 = It’s quarter to seven 8:45 = It’s quarter to nine 4. PARA MEIA HORA USA-SE: half 10:30 am = It’s tem and a half am 5. PARA DIZER OS LIMITES ATÉ MEIA HORA USA-SE: past 6:15 = It’s quarter past six 8:15 = It’s quarter past eight 6. PARA DIZER AS HORAS DO MINUTO 31 ATÉ ANTES DE SER COMPLETADA A HORA CHEIA USA-SE: to 6:45 = It’s quarter to seven 8:45 = It’s quarter to nine 7. Verbo To Do O verbo To Do significa fazer. É conjugado assim: Pessoa To Do Singular I You He She It do do does Plural We You They do do do No passado, o verbo To Do vira Did, para todas as pessoas do singular e do plural. Eu fiz minha tarefa. = I did my homework. Ela faz exercícios todos os dias. = She does exercises every day. Eles fizeram algo errado. = They did something wrong. Eu faço sozinho. = I do it myself. Verbo To Have O verbo To Have significa ter, possuir. Pode ser usado sozinho ou acompanhado de got (have got). Pessoa To Have Singular I You He She It have have has Plural We You They have have have O passado do verbo have / has é had, para todas as pessoas do singular e do plural. Ele tem um celular. = He has a cell phone. Eles têm aulas à noite. = They have classes at night. Você tinha um carro. = You had a car. Para dar precisão Several = vários A few + plural = alguns / algumas (substantivos contáveis) Few + plural = pouco de (substantivos contáveis) Little + singular = pouco de (substantivos incontáveis) A little + singular = um pouco de (substantivos incontáveis) Too = muito Too much (antes de singular) = muito, demais (substantivos incontáveis) Too many (antes de plural) = muito demais (substantivos contáveis) Often = muitas vezes Always = sempre Sometimes = às vezes Never = nunca Rarely = raramente Now = agora Tivemos vários problemas. = We had several problems. Você gostaria de um pouco de açúcar? = Would you like a little sugar? Estou muito cansado. = I am too tired. Compraram CD´s demais. = They bought too many CD´s. Eu nunca durmo até as 9 horas. = I never sleep until 9 o´clock. Vá para casa agora. = Go home now. Às vezes ela chega atrasada. = She arrives late sometimes. Para pagar How much = Quanto? Bill or check = Conta Cash = Dinheiro Charge or plastic = Cartão Checkbook = Talão de cheques ATM card = Cartão do banco Automated Teller Machine = Caixa eletrônico Quanto custa isso? = How much is that? Custa R$ 10,00. = It´s R$ 10,00. Você vai pagar em dinheiro ou cartão? = Will you pay in cash or charge? A conta, por favor. = Check, please. Para dar instruções Para darmos instruções, utilizamos os verbos no imperativo: Come in = Entre. Sit down = Sente-se. Para darmos instruções educadamente, acrescentamos o please: Type this, please. = Digite isso, por favor. Para expressarmos nossa vontade, utilizamos o want: I want you to be here tomorrow. = Quero que vocês estejam aqui amanhã. Para expressarmos nossa vontade de maneira mais educada, utilizamos o woud like: She would like the secretary to send a fax. = Ela gostaria que a secretaria mandasse um fax. Em casos mais cerimoniosos, utilizamos would you mind + verbo com ing: Would you mind helping me for the test? = Você me ajudaria para a prova? Para se orientar On the right = À direita The right = A direita On the left = À esquerda The left = A esquerda In the centre = No centro Near = Perto de Next to = Ao lado de Ele mora perto da Igreja. = He lives near the church. Vire à direita da loja. = Turn on the right of the store. A casa fica ao lado da escola. = The house is next to the school. Para deslocar-se Let´s go = Vamos There = Lá From there = De lá, dali To get somewhere = Chegar a algum lugar Vamos ao cinema. = Let´s go to the movies. Eu vim de lá. = I came from there. Ele vai chegar lá às sete horas. = He wil get there by seven o´clock. Can, Could, May, Must CAN, COULD Usamos o verbo can para falar de habilidades. Por exemplo: Eu posso dirigirum carro. = I can drive a car. Se tinha a habilidade, mas não a possui mais, troca-se o can pelo could. Assim: Eu podia andar de bicicleta = I could ride a bike. Também usamos o can e o could para pedir algo: Você pode me passar o sal? = Can you pass me the salt? Você poderia me emprestar o seu livro? = Could you lend me your book? MAY, MIGHT Assim como o can e o could, usamos o may para pedirmos algo (como permissão): Posso ir ao banheiro? = May I go to the bathroom? Também utilizamos o may e o might para falarmos sobre possibilidades: Ele pode estar atrasado. = He may be late. Nós podemos chegar mais cedo. = We might arrive earlier. MUST Utilizamos o must para falar de necessidades e obrigações. Ele também pode ser substituído pelo have to. Eu tenho que estar na escola às 7 horas. = I must be at school at 7 o´clock. Eles têm que trabalhar nos finais de semana. = They have to work on weekends. Will e Would WILL Usamos o will como auxiliar para indicar tempo futuro em inglês. Ele vai comprar um carro. = He will buy a car. Nós vamos para casa. = We will go home. Eu vou fazer um curso de inglês. = I will take an English course. Isso vai ficar caro. = It will be expensive. Vocês vão morar em Vinhedo? = Will you live in Vinhedo? WOULD O would utilizamos para indicar condições. Coisas que faríamos, diríamos, compraríamos, etc., se alguma outra coisa acontecesse ou fosse verdade. Eu iria lá, se não fosse tão longe.= I would go there if it wasn’t too far. Você viria a minha festa? = Would you come to my party? Eles comprariam aquela casa. = They would buy that house. Eu ficaria feliz se você fosse. = I would be happy if you go. CONTRAÇÕES Podemos contrair o will e o would com os pronomes na fala cotidiana. Fica assim: I will = I’ll I would = I’d You will = you’ll You would = you’d He will = he’ll He would = he’d She will = she’ll She would = she’d It will = it’ll It would = it´d We will – we’ll We would = we’d You will = you’ll You would = you’d They will = they’ll They would = they’d Shall e Should SHALL O shall é utilizado para expressar futuro como o will, e também para expressar um desejo ou uma ordem. Quando posso te ligar? = When shall I call you? Vamos vê-lo em breve. = We shall see him soon. Vamos? = Shall we go? Você trará os livros da próxima vez. = You shall bring the books the next time. SHOULD O should é utilizado como uma recomendação. Você deveria estudar para a prova. = You should study for the test. Eles deveriam comprar um carro novo. = They should buy a new car. O que eu deveria fazer? = What should I do? Isso deveria estar na sala do diretor. = It should be in the principal´s office. Present Continuous Utilizamos o Present Continuous para falar que uma ação está discorrendo no momento presente. Essa estrutura será sempre composta do verbo To Be + um outro verbo seguido de ing. Exemplos: Ela está trabalhando naquela loja do centro. She is working in that store downtown. Eles estão indo para a escola de carro. They are going to the school by car. Os verbos com o ing seguem algumas regras: Verbos terminados em consoantes somente adicionam o ing: speak + ing = speaking; Ela está falando Inglês. She is speaking English. Verbos terminados em e perdem a última letra, e adiciona-se o ing: drive – e + ing = driving; Eles estão dirigindo até a escola. They are driving to school. Verbos terminados em consoante + vogal + consoante dobra-se a última consoante e adiciona-se o ing: begin (g+i+n) = beginning. A aula está começando. The class is beginning. Preposições Usamos as preposições antes de determinados tipos de informações, como as exemplificadas na tabela abaixo: Para... Usamos... I brush my teeth four times a day. Eu tomo banho uma vez por dia. I take shower once a day. Passado dos Verbos Os verbos no passado se conjugam de uma mesma forma para todas as pessoas, e são divididos em verbos regulares e irregulares. Os verbos regulares sempre terão a terminação ed, e os irregulares precisam ser decorados. Exemplo: Listen to (regular) He listened to the radio. They listened to the radio. Exemplo: Drink (irregular) She drank a cup of coffee in the morning. They drank a lot of beer.
