aideea www.aideea.com.br 1 Adjectives and Adverbs Antes de iniciarmos os estudos dos graus comparativos e superlativos, apresentamos um breve apanhado sobre os adjetivos e os advérbios da língua inglesa. Os adjetivos são modificadores de substantivos. Já os advérbios são palavras que atuam na frase como modificadores de verbos, adjetivos ou até mesmo de outros advérbios. She had a hard day yesterday. Ela teve um dia duro ontem. She works hard every day. Ela trabalha duro todo dia. Note que, na primeira frase, a palavra hard qualifica o verbo work. É, portanto, um advérbio. Na segunda, a mesma palavra (hard) qualifica o substantivo day. Temos então: OPINIÃO TAMANHO/PESO IDADE FORMA COR ORIGEM MATÉRIA-PRIMA/MODO DE PRODUÇÃO + SUBSTANTIVO He bought a pair of nice solid white Italian leather shoes. Ele comprou um par de belos sapatos italianos de couro branco. She bought a beautiful new red car. My mother is very tired. Minha mãe está cansada. My heart is broken. I can’t live without her. Alguns dos principais são fast, hard, high, low, late, early e enough: My new car isn’t that fast. – Adjective Meu carro novo não é tão rápido. aideea www.aideea.com.br 2 Before the accident, he used to drive very fast. – Adverb Antes do acidente, He costumava dirigir muito rápido. Advérbios Biformes Alguns adjetivos podem dar origem a advérbios que poderão assumir significados diferentes: Is there a train station near here? – Adjective Há uma estação de trem perto daqui? He got near and talked. – Adverb Ele se aproximou e falou. It's been nearly three months since my last haircut. – Adverb Faz quase três meses desde o meu último corte de cabelo. Posição de Advérbios Dentre os vários tipos de advérbios que existem (modo, tempo, lugar, intensidade, frequência), cada um tem uma posição preferencial para aparecer na frase: aideea www.aideea.com.br 3 a) Advérbios de modo: Vêm, geralmente, no final das orações. She types very quickly. Ela digita muito rápido. b) Advérbios de Tempo: Podem vir tanto no final (mais comum) quanto no início da oração (para dar ênfase). I talked to them yesterday. Tomorrow we will have that meeting. Eu falei com eles ontem. Amanhã faremos a reunião. c) Advérbios de Lugar: Vêm, geralmente, no final das orações ou após verbos de movimento. They come here every day. Eles vêm aqui todo dia. d) Advérbios de Intensidade: São usados antes da palavra que se quer intensificar. It’s too hot here. Está bastante quente aqui. e) Advérbios de Frequência: São usados antes do verbo principal ou após o verbo auxiliar. She has never studied Chemistry. Ela nunca estudou química. Alguns advérbios de frequência, entretanto, quando possuírem sentido negativo ou restritivo, podem se apresentar no início da oração, desde que haja a anteposição do verbo auxiliar ao sujeito: I know, never will I see her again. Eu sei, nunca a verei novamente. Seldom does he speak with her. Raramente ele fala com ela. Ordem de Advérbios na Frase Podemos ter, numa mesma frase, vários advérbios sendo usados concomitantemente. Neste caso usaremos a seguinte sequência: MODO – LUGAR – TEMPO (MANNER – PLACE – TIME) I study hard in my bedroom every day. Estudo muito no meu quarto todo dia. I rest calmly here every day. Eu descanso tranquilamente aqui todo dia. Se o verbo for de movimento, porém, usaremos outra sequência: LUGAR – MODO – TEMPO (PLACE – MANNER – TIME) They go to work by bus every Friday. Eles vão para o trabalho de ônibus toda sexta-feira. The bird flew into the room graciously this morning. O pássaro voou graciosamente para dentro da sala esta manhã. Quando tivermos dentro da frasevários advérbios do mesmo tipo, virá primeiramente a informação mais específica dentre estes advérbios. Em se tratando de advérbios de tempo, usaremos primeiro o menor: I was born in the morning, on December 20th, in 1976. Eu nasci pela manhã, no dia vinte de dezembro de 1976. They got married on a rainy day in the fall of 1972. Comparativo de Igualdade As adjective/adverb as Tanto/tão ... quanto – afirmativas e negativas So adjective/adverb as Tanto/tão ... quanto – negativas aideea www.aideea.com.br 4 Susie is as beautiful as Sandy. Susie é tão bonita quanto Sandy. This building is not as high as the Empire State. Este prédio não é tão alto quanto o Empire State. Jane is not so tall as Bruno. Jane não é tão alta quanto Bruno. O comparativo de igualdade também pode ser usado para dizer o quanto uma coisa é mais que a outra. Para isso, utilizam-se expressões como twice, three times, four times (duas, três, quatro vezes) etc. This building is twice as high as that one. Este prédio é duas vezes mais alto do que aquele. Comparativo de Inferioridade Less adjective/adverb than Menos ... que Kate seemed less interested than Paula in the results of the tests. Kate parecia menos interessada que Paula nos resultados das provas. His character is less intricate than mine. O personagem dele é menos complexo do que o meu. Comparativo de Superioridade Para definirmos como usar o Comparativo de Superioridade é necessário primeiramente identificar qual o tipo de adjetivo ou advérbio está sendo utilizado (curto ou longo). Forma Comparativa Sintética Adjective/adverb + er than Mais ... que – adjetivos/advérbios curtos My car is cleaner than yours. Meu carro é mais limpo que o seu. This book is cheaper than that one. Superlatives Pela própria definição de superlativo, ou seja, quando temos uma coisa acima de todas as outras, não podemos falar em superlativo de igualdade. Teremos então somente os superlativos de inferioridade e superioridade. Superlativo de Inferioridade The least adjective/adverb O menos... This group is the least likely of the four to win. Este grupo é o menos provável dos quatro para ganhar. Peter has been the least developed student since the classes started. Peter tem sido o aluno menos desenvolvido desde que as aulas começaram. Assim como no comparativo de inferioridade, devemos evitar o uso de adjetivos e advérbios curtos. Superlativo de Superioridade Também teremos duas formas superlativas: a sintética e a analítica.
