comparison/contrast

question and answer
 cause and consequence

Explicação:
The comparison-contrast pattern is used to discuss the similarities and/or differences between two or more
ideas or occurrences in order to reveal a certain point about these ideas or occurrences. The point may be that
one option is better than the other, that they are both equal, or that under specific conditions one option is better
than another. Regardless of the point that is expressed, the comparison-contrast style of paragraph will follow a
pattern which will be discussed within the examples in this section of the handout.
A comparison-contrast paragraph or paragraph block may have one of three purposes: to present only
comparison information, to present only contrast information, or to present both types of information.
However, regardless of what specific purpose the paragraph has, it may be organized in either of two ways:
alternating details or option-by-option.

Explicação:
Leia o parágrafo abaixo e escolha a alternativa que identifica o tipo de desenvolvimento de
parágrafo que está sendo usado pelo autor. Pense em como o autor desenvolve a sua idéia sobre
reciclagem.)
Why recycling is important? UK households produced 30.5 million tonnes of waste in 2003/04,
of which 17% was collected for recycling. (source: defra.gov.uk)
This figure is still quite low compared to some of our neighbouring EU countries, some
recycling over 50% for their waste. There is still a great deal of waste which could be recycled
that ends up in landfill sites which is harmful to the environment. Recycling is an excellent way
of saving energy and conserving the environment. Did you know that: - 1 recycled tin can
would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. - 1 recycled glass bottle would
save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. - 1 recycled plastic bottle would save
enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. - 70% less energy is required to
recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.

The order most often used in persuasive writing includes four steps, or parts. Choose the
option which shows the appropriate order:

¿Topic sentence( sentence frasal)
. Clarifying remark (about the context in which the earlier claim was made. )
¿First supporting sentence (primeira sentença de apoio)
¿Second supporting sentence ( segunda sentença de apoio)
¿Third supporting sentence ( terceira sentença de apoio)
¿Concluding sentence ( sentença final que resuma a sentença frasal)

Topic sentence and control of the content to keep it coherent and cohesive.
Topic sentence and qualification of the content to keep it coherent and cohesive.

Explicação:
To achieve paragraph unity, a writer must ensure two things only. First, the paragraph must have a single
generalization that serves as the focus of attention, that is, a topic sentence. Secondly, a writer must control the
content of every other sentence in the paragraph's body such that (a) it contains more specific information than
the topic sentence and (b) it maintains the same focus of attention as the topic sentence.

4.

 To introduce the topic immediately.
To give an opinion or impression of the writer about the topic.
To substitute for a title to the paragraph.
 To limit the topic.
To show an attitude or a reaction of the writer to the topic.

Explicação:
A topic sentence is not and cannot be considered a title. The topic sentence states the opinion that the writer
wants the audience to accept.

 state a conclusion

Explicação:
Argumentative texts depart from the assumption that the receiver¿s beliefs must be changed. They often start with
the negation of a statement which attributes a quality or characteristic activity to something or someone (esp.
scholarly texts). They also include advertising texts, which try to persuade/convince their readers that a product is
somehow better, at least implicitly, than others.

The following statement illustrate types of opinions that you can use as topics for
argumentative writing: Choose the most appropriate item for the following statement:

Explicação:
Irrelevant sentences are those that do not support the main idea of the passage. Irrelevant sentences distract
readers from the main point of the passage. This is because they do not relate to or support the main idea. Therefore,
it is necessary to avoid using irrelevant sentences in writing and to be able to spot them as a reader. The simplest
way to identify irrelevant sentences in a passage is to ask yourself the following three questions:
