Part 01 – We wish you a Merry Christmas (Nós te desejamos um Feliz Natal) 
 
My first wish is to have infinite wishes. 
(Meu primeiro desejo é ter desejos infinitos.) 
 
They wish us good luck. 
(Eles nos desejam boa sorte.) 
 
I wish you the best. 
(Eu te desejo o melhor.) 
 
She wishes to leave the office now. 
(Ela deseja deixar o escritório agora.) 
 
He wishes to stay home this weekend. 
(Ele deseja ficar em casa este fim de semana.) 
 
Nas frases acima o verbo to wish tem o significado literal mesmo (desejar/querer), e tais 
vontades são possíveis de acontecer. 
 
Part 02 – I wish (Quem me dera) => Wishes about the Present 
 
Your friend: Wow! Is that Ferrari yours? 
(Uau, aquela Ferrari é sua?) 
 
You: I wish! 
(Quem me dera!/ Eu gostaria.) 
 
Your friend: I can cook the best spaghetti in the world. 
(Eu posso cozinhar o melhor spaghetti do mundo.) 
 
You: Pfff, you wish! 
(Pfff, bem que tu queria.)
 
Agora nestes exemplos, o verbo to wish expressa um desejo (no presente) que algo fosse 
verdade ou diferente da realidade, mas que não são possíves como você gostaria. 
 
I wish I had a Ferrari. – but I don’t have one. 
(Eu queria ter uma Ferrari. – mas eu não tenho uma.) 
 
You wish you could cook the best spaghetti in the world. – but you can’t. 
(Você queria poder cozinhar o melhor spaghetti no mundo. – mas você não pode.)

Adam wishes he spoke English better. – but he doesn’t. 
(Adam queria falar inglês melhor. – mas ele não fala.) 
 
They wish they didn’t have to work on Sunday. – but they do. 
(Eles queriam não ter que trabalhar no domingo. – mas eles têm.) 
 
Mary wishes her daughter visited her more. – but she doesn’t. 
(Mary queria que sua filha a visitasse mais. – mas ela não visita.) 
 
I wish you were here. – but you’re not. 
(Eu queria que você estivesse aqui. – mas você não está.) 
 
I wish I were taller. – but I’m not. 
(Eu queria ser mais alto. – mas eu não sou.) 
 
He wishes he weren’t fat. – but he is. 
(Ele queria não ser gordo. – mas ele é) 
 
We wish it were Saturday. – but it isn’t 
(Nós queríamos que fosse sábado. – mas não é.)

(Na minha opinião, eu não sou rico suficiente. Eu queria...) 
 
Eva can’t play the drums. She wishes… 
(Eva não consegue tocar bacteria. Ela queria...) 
 
Dan is very shy. He wishes… 
(Dan é muito tímido. Ele queria…) 
 
They don’t live in England. They wish…

Part 3 – Wishes about the Past (Desejos sobre o Passado) 
 
Compare: 
 Wish about the present => verb in the Past Simple 
I wish I had a bicycle to go to work. – but I don’t. => wish about the present 
(Eu queria ter uma bicicleta para ir ao trabalho. – mas não tenho.) 
 
 Wish about the past => verb in the Past Perfect 
I wish I had had a bicycle to ride with my friends when I was little. – but I didn’t. 
(Queria ter tido uma bicicleta para andar com meus amigos quando eu era pequeno. – mas não tive.) 
 
Kurt wishes he had studied more for the exam. – but he didn’t. 
(Kurt queria que tivesse estudado mais para o exame. - mas não ele estudou.) 
 
Susy wishes she had read the book before she watched the movie. – but she didn’t. 
(Susy queria ter lido o livro antes de ela assistir ao filme. – mas ela não viu.) 
 
The Fords wish they had traveled to Hawaii before. – but they didn’t. 
(Os Fords queriam ter viajado para o Hawaii antes. – mas eles não viajaram.) 
 
We wish we had been better students at school. – but we weren’t. 
(Nós queríamos ter sido melhores alunos nas escola. – mas nós não fomos.) 
 
You wish you hadn’t said that to him, right? – but you did. 
(Vocë queria não ter dito aquilo para ele, certo? – mas você disse.) 
 
I wish I had been able to go to Rock in Rio. – but I wasn’t. 
(Eu queria ter sido capaz de ir ao Rock in Rio. – mas eu não fui.)
