In the USA, as well as in other countries, children wear costumes and go to people's homes saying "Trick or treat!" to ask for candy, which is called sweets in the United Kingdom; that way, people traditionally give it to them. This practice originally involved a threat. A threat is when someone says that they will do something bad to you if they do not get what they want. In this case, the threat could be explained as: "Give me a treat or I will play a trick on you." Children today usually do not play tricks if they do not get treats. However, some children still get up to mischief (pranks or things to make fun of people; like putting toilet paper in trees; writing on windows with soap or throwing eggs at people's houses). People sometimes dress up as ghosts, witches, goblins and other scary things for Halloween. In Brazil, this day is often celebrated in schools or tv programs for children. Vocabulário de apoio: ● Costumes: fantasias (roupas) ● Trick or treat: doce ou travessura ● Threat: ameaça ● Play a trick: pregar uma peça ● Treat: um agrado (doces, balas) ● Dress up as: fantasiar-se de ● Get up to mischief: fazer travessura ● Happen: acontecer Activities: 1. This man lived on the streets and played tricks on everyone. He was drunk and owed to everyone because of his addiction. One fine day the Devil came to him in order to religion him away, but Jack was very smart and rolled the Devil up and made him give up religion for less than 1 year. After that year of life Jack faced the Devil again who tried to religion him to hell, because he was terrible with people, but he was also very smart. Jack told a crazy story and made the Devil climb a tree and as soon as he saw him up there, he ran and drew a cross on the tree trunk to imprison him up there. The devil, seeing himself trapped in the tree, accepted to leave drunk Jack alone for good and left for hell. But since no one is immortal, one day Jack died and went to knock on the doors of heaven asking to enter. God didn't let him, because he had been a very bad man and on top of that he had made a deal with the Devil. So Jack had no choice but to try to get into hell, but the Devil felt it was time to take revenge for being passed over and he wouldn't let him in. But for obvious reasons, the Devil had a certain "admiration" for Jack and gave him a flashlight as a gift, to light his way until he found where to stay for the rest of his eternity. To this day, on October 31, Jack can be seen wandering around with a flashlight looking for a place to live. Today he calls him Jack of the Lantern and in his native language Jack O'Lantern and has become the main symbol of Halloween!
