Aventureiros e cientistas Fritz Müller Johann Friedrich Theodor Müller or simply Fritz Müller was born in Windischholzhausen, near Erfurt, Ger- many, on March 31, 1822 . He was raised in a religious and at the same time, intel- lectualized environment. His father, Johann Friedrich Müller, was an evangelical pastor who was responsible to his literacy. Later on, when he was a teenager, his maternal grandfather Johann Bartholomaus Trommsdorff and uncle Hermann, both chemists and pharmacists, enchanted him with the pharmacy, an excelente activity of science introduction, and when he finished middle school he was hired as an apprentice in a pharmacy in the city of Naumburg. In the first two decades of the nineteenth century, the knowledge of physics, chemistry and the evolution of industrial capitalism influenced the biological investiga- tions, so that philosophical naturalists and subjective inter- pretations, characteristics of romanticism, were replaced by a more materialistic and technical vision, especially with the creating of precision instruments for observation of species and data collection. The financial investment from countries like England, Germany and France in maritime exploration trips, to meet and explore new lands and exotic cultures, urged young people to learn science and clearing of new frontiers. Adventurers and scientists returning from distant Farmácia onde Fritz Müller trabalhou - ACERVO AHJFS The Pharmacy where Fritz worked - collection AHJFS 6 7 retornavam das viagens repletos de novidades e o conheci- mento se alargava. Inúmeras eram as descobertas científicas que ocorriam naquele momento. A Europa fervilhava. Europe was in intellectual ebullition as numerous scientific discoveries were occurring at that period of time. Europe teeming. The boundaries of thought also expanded and contesting ideas arose. Work as a driving force of wealth provoked rebellions and centralizing governments were fertile ground for the emergence of revolutionary and nationalist ideas. At this historic moment, Fritz Müller was entering the University in Berlin, decided to become a naturalist. The institution, center of academic knowledge and cradle for the ideas of Johann Fichte Gotllieb and Alexander von Humboldt, who approached the philosophy of scientific research, indelibly marked the young student, not only in technical-scientific field, but also moved him towards van- guards of thought. His first scientific work was about leeches which was also the subject of his thesis to obtain the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, being published in 1844 in the Archiv für Na- turgeschicht magazine. After receiving his degree in Philosophy, he returned to Erfurt and joined the probationary period in order to teach at the Gymnasium in the city where he had studied, teaching algebra and natural history. His maternal grandfather had died and he went to live with his maternal uncle Hermann Trommsdorff, a che- mical, pharmaceutical and heir of the family´s pharmacy, the Schwanapotheke. During this period his brother Hermann, seven years younger was studying in the same school, and assured that he was a great influence, since "it was more interesting to meticulously studying just one animal than to see the whole zoo." the same scientific path and later would later follow become a renowned naturalist. After six months of starting at the Gymnasium in Erfurt, Fritz Müller gave up a teaching career, and in the beginning of Oc- tober 1845 he enrolled in the medical school at the University of Greifswald, which acted decisively in the humanistic education of the young student. Without abandoning his zoological investigations, he would participate in intel- lectual discussions about philosophy and religion. Emmanuel Kant and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel were his sources of inspira- tion. Also knowing the works of David Friedri- ch Strauss, Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach, Bruno Bauer, Max Stirner, Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx, was considered cutting edge. This was a time of strong religious influence on social and scientific issues. His reflections, now contaminated by the fiery speeches about religious dogma, led him to challenge the faith and live according to his own beliefs, seeking coherence between knowledge and practice. So it was natural that such attitudes collide with the values of a traditional religious family, in which he was raised. The intellectual activity of that time influenced him to actively participate in the political and social movements, making him an activist of the Democratic Party and secre- tary of “Volksverein” organization that brought together workers and students. But their hopes were soon dissolved, after long theoretical discussions about the basic human rights of the Frankfurt parliament, which was won by monarchical power by force on June 18, 1849, with the dissolution of the National Assembly by Bismarck . This political involvement, however, deeply marked him through life, both by experience in active participation, as for the deception of the result. He was decided to keep his political and philosophical convic- tions, and when he was about to finish medical school, a new dilemma appeared: Fritz Müller refused to pronounce a sen- tence of the medical oath, required for graduation,"so help me God and his most holy Gospel". He requested permission to delete that sentence or to make the Jewish oath, where there was no mention of the divine aid, but the request was denied and as a result is he could not obtain his degree. Fritz Muller, despite all problems was always consistent in his personal stance of beliefs, taking this as a personal brand, even though the fact has caused him recurring difficulties and did not end with this particular episode. Atendendo aos argu- mentos do irmão August, Fritz Müller fez aquela que talvez tenha sido a única Some of Fritz Müller statements: "I once said that sincerity is part of my ideal and this is critical for me ." "Just as the body breathe freely, the spirit must also think freely." "Slave I do not want to be, and I cannot." "Without freedom there is no truth or virtue." "... I made a firm decision to sacrifice everything for truth and freedom." Hopeless with the outcome of his political actions, unable to practice medicine on German soil and having relinquished his position as a teacher in public school, job prospects were not promising. The possibilities were scarce, working as a private teacher, as a doctor in a ship or abroad, or changing careers. Acquainted and delighted with the works of Hum- boldt and Darwin with their trip reports to the New World, Fritz is now seriously considering emigrating. Brazil was a possible way to move forward, as the descriptions and scientific results presented by Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwe- ge, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, Karl Christian von Langsdorf and artistic graphics Johann Moritz Rugendas and Nicolas - Antoine Taunay were appealling. His meeting with Hermann Blumenau, a former worker at the pharmacy of Trommsdorff,in Erfurt, and active in the establishment of a settlement in Brazil. After examining some possibilities, he considered emigrating, more exactly to the colony of Blumenau, Santa Catarina. A vida era difícil e os recursos limitados, mas, conforme seus relatos aos parentes na Alemanha, tudo aqui lhe resultava em enorme satisfação pois aceitara definitivamente a nova vida. contrary to his convictions: he married Karoline, to prevent her from the embarrassment of emigrating on the condition of a concubine, which could bring her problems in the Ger- man settlement. On May 19, 1852, in Hamburg, they went aboard the sailboat Florentin, towards Brazil, Fritz with his wife and daughter Anna, only a few months of life (the first daughter, Louise, had died ), together with his brother Au- gust and wife. In July, he finally landed on the island of San Francisco, on the coast of Santa Catarina and his brother August made the first contact with the settlement of Blumenau, returning very impressed. On August 21, after three days of travelling, they arrived at their destination also becaming part of the group of German settlers. The first four years in the small Blumenau village were dedicated to the survival of the new family, and for them, the harsh environment of lush tropical forests, diverse wildlife, were different from Europe, being occasionally dangerous. Having acquired lots numbers 1 (Fritz) and 2 (August), near of where it would approximately be the location of the number 1,000 current Amazonas street in Blumenau. They cut segments of the forest, preparing the land for cultivation and reaped the fruit of their own labor. There were dangers unknown to them, as the inhos- pitable forest, jaguars, snakes, myriads of mosquitoes and isolated Indians, who sometimes toured the land preventing the settlers to advance on their territories. Fritz Müller was a good worker, but his aversion to religious issues was considered by the administrator Hermann Blumenau, a threat to the state of peace in the colony. He feared that such influences were harmful to the settlers, simple people, dedicated only to manual labor who migrated without any intellectual training he and Fritz received in Germany. However, there was an episode that came to the rescue of Fritz and Blumenau: The President of the Province of Santa Catarina, João José Coutinho, consulted him about the possibility of referring someone to the position of teacher in the capi- tal, Nossa Senhora do Desterro, for he intended to reopen the Provincial High School, whose activities had ended four years before. Invited to fill the posi- tion of professor of mathema- tics and sciences, Fritz Müller eventually accepted, moving to the capital in 1856, with the prospect of resuming studies on marine fauna activity that he started developing in Germany. To meet a requirement of an effective competition in the position of teacher, he became a naturalized Brazilian citizen, which, as he claimed, did not cause him any embarrassment. Until the rise of Dom Pedro II to the throne of Brazil, the educational concern was limited to primary education. With the new emperor, the creation of middle schools was encouraged so that in 1840 the Jesuits founded a secondary school, the first in the province of Santa Catarina which was active for thirteen consecutive years. The school was forced to close its doors due to the death of the majority of tea- chers victimized by a yellow fever epidemic in 1852. At that time, however, a phase of cultural expansion in the province started with the publicationof books, the cultivation of new arts such as painting, music and theater, plus the start of construction of the Santa Isabel Theatre (after Álvaro de Car- valho) and in 1854 with the founding of the Provincial Public Library. Given this context, President Coutinho decided to inaugurate a new secondary public school, now financed and run by the State and that was not religious. Such features and the profile of the hired teachers would yield him heavy criticism in 1857, when re - started the activities of the Lyceum in Desterro. Jornais da época criticavam o Presidente Couti- nho, do Partido Liberal, cujos integrantes defendiam o Liceu e a secularização do ensino. Fritz Müller and other Protestants or foreign tea- chers were causing discomfort in the “desterrense” Catholic community. Newspapers at the time criticized President Coutinho, and the Liberal Party, whose members defended the Lyceum and the secularization of education. On the other hand, Father Joaquim Gomes de Oliveira e Paiva, supported by the Conservative Party, wanted a school with only Brazi- lian and Catholic teachers, because as a Resolution of 1854, applie to public and private schools, they should profess the official religion of the State. Even in the face of political disagreements, Fritz Müller was teaching regularly, and organizing a Botanical Garden and a laboratory of physics and chemistry, receiving great support and appreciation from President Coutinho. However, with the changes that occurred after the departure of this government, in 1859, the arboretum has lost its spa- ce, and didactic-scientific equipment ordered from Germany were sold for ridiculous prices. In 1864 the Jesuits finally took the Lyceum, and, as a result, foreign teachers were dismissed, while the ones effec- tive in the position were gradually forced to cease to teach. On May 1867, unhappy and uncomfortable at the Lyceum professorship, Fritz Müller proposed his return to Vale do Itajaí, in order to study plants of agricultural and medicinal interest, as well as issues related to natural history, which was accepted by the government of the Province, being declared extinct his professorship. The return to the valley takes place in July that same year. The eleven years spent in Desterro (1856-1867) have been very productive for Fritz Müller, in the scientific realm. In parti- cular, it was there that he produced the work which decisively acted to the consolidation of the evolutio- nary theory of Charles Darwin. The work of Charles Darwin, “The Origin of Species”, was published in 1859, but Fritz Muller only received a copy of the German Translation in 1861, published in the previous year. Enthusiastic about the theory, he decided to apply it to studies on crustaceans, which he had expanded since he was dismis- sed from his job as a teacher. He collected samples mainly at Praia de Fora, today grounded by Av Beira Mar Norte, and the set of studies gives birth to the book “Für Darwin” published in Germany in 1864 and pioneered the defense of the Darwi- nian theory, now with biological facts and not just in the field of ideas. A year later, Charles Darwin finally gets in touch with the book and this is the starting point of a prolific and assiduous correspondence bet- ween them, which resulted in a massive exchange of scientific information and a strong friendship which lasted until 1882, the year of death of Darwin. This correspondence explains the admira- tion and respect that existed between these two great scientists and their analysis allows one to glimpse much of the nineteenth-century science. Fritz Müller is cited more than a dozen times in the sixth edition of the Origin of Spe- cies, by Charles Darwin. Fritz Müller, still remained bound to theProvincial High School for ten more years, when he was invited by the Director of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro to occupy the position of Traveler Naturalist which he did for a period of 15 years. In this function, while develo- ping numerous scientific studies on fauna and flora in Santa Catarina, he also accompanied many researchers on scholar tours, including various and different topics being some of them related to historical native Brazilians settlements. Neste episódio, Fritz Müller en- gajou-se junto às autoridades de It is worth remembering the absence of any road linking the capital to the area of Blumenau. The displacements were made by canoe or other boat through the Itajai River and from there by ship to Desterro. Occasionally Fritz Muller did the journey on foot which lasted about five days walking. In October 1876, together with the engineer Emil Odebrecht, he made his first trip as a natu- ralist traveler, towards Santa Catarina plateau, especially in the fields of Curitibanos. In order to research the butterflies in midsummer, in Fe- bruary 1877, still in the company of Odebrecht he launched a new tour towards the river Taió. Fritz Muller was sad to watch the beginning of human interference that landscape: the devasta- tion effected by fire from pastures and bamboo groves, which raged through the forest, consu- ming centennial pines, of which only the trunks remained. Fritz also conducted expeditions to the territories of Dona Francisca (Joinville ), São Francisco and São Bento do Sul, made by canoe and on foot. The great flood of 1880 that devastated Blumenau, rea- ched the height of the roof of his house, which was located near the banks of the river Itajaí Acu. When Charles Darwin, after having learned of the flooding and all the damage suffered by his friend, offered financial support, but it was immediately refused by the naturalist. Estes eventos envolveram nomes conhecidos da política catarinense, como Hercílio Luz, Bonifácio da Cunha, rities of Blumenau, helped the victims in the rebuilding of the new community. Being elected as an Honorary Member of the Entomological Society of London in 1884, he recei- ved in the same year, unofficially, the news that he had been sacked from his position as Travelling Na- turalist. However, by the same sources, he learned that such act was revoked, probably by order of the Emperor Dom Pedro II, great supporter of the science and the arts in Brazil. Fritz remained in office until 1891, when the changes brought about by the fall of the mo- narchy in Brazil, and the new guidelines demanded that the travelers from the National Museum should be residing in Rio de Janeiro. Refusing to accept such a charge, he then quit the position and requested his dismissal in a handwritten letter addressed to the Director, Dr. Ladislao Netto. Always concerned with political issues and one of the few educated men of the colony, Fritz Müller actively participated in the quarrels of his time either in discussions or through articles published in newspa- pers. He came to exercise the office of Justice of the Peace and also the Superintendent of Blumenau (now corresponding to the position of mayor), the latter for a period of only 27 days in 1892. The days that followed were turbulent, and in the consolidation of the republican regime, several episodes occurred in Blumenau. In one of these, Fritz Müller was taken as a witness in the attack of the politician Elesbão Pinto da Luz. These events involved well known names of politicians of Santa Catarina such as Hercílio Luz, Bonifacio Embaúba Foto acervo Museu de Ecologia Fritz Müller. Fritz Müller was firm in his testimony, including pointing Hercílio Luz as agent for the attack, although he was at the time recognized in the state as a florianista . Later, Floriano Peixo- to sent Colonel Moreira Cesar to Desterro, in front of five hundred men, which produced an episode known as one of the bloo- diest pages in the history of Santa Catarina. Under his orders, shootings and summary execution, including Elesbão Pinto da Luz. In this same period, the Federalist Re- volution, which erupted in Rio Grande do Sul, spans Santa Catarina and the rebels, known as maragatos, crossed through Blumenau and stole a horse that belonged to Fritz Muller. According to him, the group of villains took no more because nothing else was there to be stolen. In March 1893, his wife Karoline, com- panion of a lifetime, died. Their daughter Thusnelda, appalled by the situation of the father who recently suffered great losses and disappointments, left two of her sons, Hans and Fritz Lorenz, living with their grandfa- ther. Only the first remained with Fritz, as the second soon left to study in Curitiba. Fritz Müller taught him valuable lessons on species that were collected along the paths, espe- cially bromeliads. In 1894, while celebrating his 50 years of graduation, Fritz Müller is honored by the University of Berlin, receiving a heavy book with messages signed by European naturalists, colleagues and admirers. In the following years, with the decline of his health, he moves to the residence of his daughter Anna Brockes. There, on May 21, 1897, he died, babbling scienti- fic names that were one of his last great passions in science: the bromeliads . The recognition of the scientific contribution of Fritz Müller was highlighted by the granting of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in 1868 by the University of Bonn and in 1874 the University of Tübingen, both in Germany, and long after his death, in 2009, he was also granted the title by the Federal University of Santa Catarina. His scientific production has aided the understanding of Brazilian fauna and flora, in the projection of the name of our country world- wide and in consolidating biology as a branch of science. His work continues today and is cited or underlies research in various parts of the world. The original material collected in the field is in numerous museums and institutions of natural history in the country and abroad. Fritz Müller, with his scientific corresponden- ce, promoted a broad social network designed to Brazil, Santa Catarina and most es- pecially in academic circles of the world. Concerned only to expand knowledge, he distri- buted, mostly by mail, infor- mation from his studies, this way contributing to the scientific investigations of many naturalists. He was the developer and disseminator of a knowledge network. Scientists of the world, when in need of the support of an active study in the tropical field and in various themes of biology, always trusted naturalist Fritz Müller as a reliable response to their questions. Hard worker and with a benevolent personality, Fritz Müller, while researching and observing Santa Catarina`s nature and environment, always sought to help everyone who addressed him with questions. The quality of information and illustrations contained in the letters he was writing to his consultants, was regarded as worthy as a scientific paper being many of them published in scientific journals from Ger- many, England and the United States of America.
