Read the following consersation and try to identify these verb tenses. (was/were+subject+verb with-ing) I wasn’t expecting it from this author. (subject+wasn’t/weren’t+verb with-ing) Lana was running away. (subject+was/were+ Verb with-ing) Past continuous The past continuous usually describes na ongoing situation in the past, while the simple past presentes shorter, finished actions. Whem used together, the action in the simple past often interrupts the situation in progress. Lana was running away when her true love asked her to stay. · Presente perfect We can use the present perfect to talk about experiences that happened at an indefinite point in the past or actions that started some time ago and continue up to now. Subject+have/has not+past participle To ask about life experiences, we can use the expression ever We can use never (not ever) to talk about a life experience we don’t have yet. Have you ever read a sci-fi book I’ve never read a book in Spanish. · Past participle Remember: in the present perfect, we use the auxiliary verb have+main verb in the past participle. EXEMPLO: She worked last Saturday (ela trabalhou no sábado passado) · Usa-se para falar sobre a vida de pessoas que não estão mais vivas.EXEMPLOS: Charlie chaplin was a British comic actor. (charlie chaplin foi um ator comico britânico) · Usa-se para falar de ações habituais que aconteciam no passado.EXEMPLOS: HE visited his parents every weekend. (ele visitavam seus pais todo fim de semana) · Usa-se com as seguintes expressões temporais: yesterday, last night, week, month, year, ago, then, when, how long ago...?,in 1985,etc. EXEMPLO: Tom stay ed at home last night. (tom ficou em casa ontem a noite)Past continuos · Usa-se para falar de uma ação que estava em andamento no passado sem mencionar quando a ação foi iniciada ou cloncoida,EXEMPLO: Dave was playing footbal yesterday inthe afternoon (Dave estava jogando futebol ontem á tarde) · Usa-se para falar de duas ou mais ações simultaneas no passado.EXEMPLO: My son was reading while I was cooking. (meu filho estava lendo enquanto e estava cozinhado) · Usa-se para falar de uma ação que estava em andamento quando outra ação a interronpeu Usa-se o passado continuo para a ação em andamento e o passado simples para a ação que interrupeu o que estava em andamento.EXEMPLOS: He was walking to work when he fell. (ele estva caminhando para o trabalho quando ele caiu) · Usa-se com as seguintes expresões temporais: when, while, as, all play, night, morning, afternoon/ week, etc.EXEMPLOS: I was having a bath when the telephone rang.
