Os dois tipos de divisão celular são mitose e meiose. A mitose ocorre em células somáticas e é responsável pelo crescimento, desenvolvimento e reparo dos tecidos. Ela resulta em duas células filhas idênticas. Já a meiose ocorre em células reprodutivas e é responsável pela reprodução sexual. Ela resulta em quatro células filhas geneticamente diversas.
