A visão inicial da deficiência na história era considerá-la um fenômeno metafísico, determinado pela possessão demoníaca ou escolha divina da pessoa para a purificação dos pecados de seus semelhantes. Séculos de Inquisição Católica e posterior rigidez moral e ética da Reforma Protestante contribuíram para que as pessoas com deficiência fossem tratadas como a personificação do mal e, portanto, sujeitas a punição, tortura e até mesmo morte. À medida que o conhecimento no campo da medicina foi construído e acumulado na história da humanidade, a deficiência passou a ser vista como uma doença incurável.
