David: Hey, Carlos! Today we’re going to a farmer’s market. Carlos: Farmer’s market? What’s that? David: It’s a place where the farmers take their farm produce, like vegetables, fruit, and flowers, to sell them to customers. Carlos: Oh, I get it. We’ve got something like that in Brazil too. David: Saturday is normally the farmer’s market day. I like to go there to buy fresh vegetables for our meals, and also to support small farmers. Carlos: It’s very nice of you, Mr McDonald. David: Come on! We’ve got a lot of things to buy. Let’s go to this first stall. David: Good morning, lady! Lady Vendor: Good morning, sir! How can I help you? David: I’d like two heads of lettuce, four eggplants, and one cabbage. Lady Vendor: OK. Would you like anything else? David: Yes, please. I’d like a pound of broccoli and a pound of cauliflower. Lady Vendor: Here you are. Anything else? David: Hum… Let me see... How much is it? Lady Vendor: Each head of lettuce is $2, the eggplants are $1.50 each, but as you are taking four of them, I’ll make it $4 total; the cabbage, the broccoli, and the cauliflower are $1.50 each. Total $12.50 [twelve dollars and fifty cents]. David: We also need some meat and fruit. What fruits do you like, Carlos? Carlos: Well, I like apple, strawberry, watermelon, and grape. David: Do you have them, ma’am? Lady Vendor: I have them all. How much of each fruit do you need? Carlos: Uhh, what do you say, Mr McDonald? David: You can take one pound each. Lady Vendor: All right. One pound of grapes, one pound of apples, one pound of strawberries… I sell watermelon per unit. Would you like one? It’s $2.5 [two dollars and fifty cents]. David: Yes, please. Lady Vendor: Oh, sir, and today we have the most beautiful blueberries. You must take them. This container is 24 ounces, and it’s only $4 [four bucks].
