To obtain more information about the characteristics, use, and operation of electric window switches, consult the owner's manual that comes in the vehicle's glove compartment. ELECTRIC WINDOW MOTOR DESCRIPTION In this model, the electrically operated front door windows are part of the standard equipment. Each motor has a reversible permanent magnet electric motor with a right-angle gear housing mechanism that drives the window regulator. In addition, each electric window motor is equipped with an integrated automatic reset circuit breaker to protect the motor against overloads. (1) The gear housing of the electric window motor is fixed to the window regulator drum housing by screws. The window regulators used in the four doors are of the cable and vertical post drum type. A molded plastic slide guided by the post is actuated by the regulator cables. The slide raises and lowers the window glass through a steel lifting plate coupling. The front and rear glass channels contained within each door guide and stabilize each end of the glass. The electric window motor and gear housing assembly cannot be repaired; if it is defective or damaged, the entire electric window motor and gear housing unit must be replaced. Window regulators can be serviced. OPERATION Connecting positive and negative battery to the two motor terminals will cause the electric window motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing the current through these same two connections will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction. When the electric window motor operates, it rotates the regulator cable drum through its gear housing. The window regulator cable drum is connected by two cables to the plastic slide in the vertical post. By rotating the cable drum, it lets the cable out on one side of the drum, and pulls the cable in on the other side of the drum. Changes in cable length move the slide up or down the vertical post, raising or lowering the window glass. If the window regulator or window glass becomes jammed, encounters obstructions, or reaches the limits of its travel, it will overload the electric window motor.
