Considering the studies addressed for this research, it is relevant to highlight the assumptions defended by OKUMA (1998), who has long been researching the importance of physical activities for the elderly. According to the researcher, physical activities greatly contribute to the improvement of the health of the elderly, greatly maximizing the quality of life of this public. It is worth noting that the author also highlights that it is scientifically proven that elderly people who regularly practice physical exercises reduce the degeneration resulting from biological and physical aging of people (OKUMA, 1998). Corroborating with this thought are the teachings of Hermínio Cavalinho (2013), since in his scientific production he asserts that whatever the typologies of physical activities and exercises, and being executed under professional supervision, the gains and benefits regarding the quality of life of the elderly have significant improvements. The author emphasizes, however, that the choice of the type and/or modality of exercise should be made attending to the individualities of each elderly person, so that the results are potentiated. Thus, and considering that the scope of this research project is to approach the importance of physical activity, especially weightlifting exercises, it is imperative to mention the words of Chagas (2008), where it can be inferred that weightlifting activity is the physical exercise capable of providing muscles with significant effects on muscle structure, in addition, it is worth noting, to the gain of strength to the muscles. The teachings of Rocha (2013) also agree with the author's premises above, since in his conception, the elderly practitioner of weightlifting activity will have as a result the benefits of preventing some diseases, improving mobility and body movement, which substantially, will provide quality of life. According to Rocha (2013), considering that the primary objective of weightlifting activity is the conditioning of the muscle to gain muscle strength, these gains, however, only materialize if the exercises are performed effectively, systematically and persistently by the practitioner. 2.2 Human aging: physiological, social and psychological framework 2.2.1 From the physiological framework Among all the factors of aging, the physiological aspect is the most visible, as it can be physically evidenced in any elderly individual. Aging is a stage of individual development. The central nervous system is the main part to be affected, with a decrease in gray matter at the cerebral and medullary levels. According to Geist, cited by Vargas (1993), aging produces the following organic modifications: Increase in connective tissue in the body; Gradual loss of elastic properties of connective tissue; Disappearance of cellular elements of the nervous system; Reduction in the amount of normally functioning cells; Increase in the amount of fat; Decrease in oxygen consumption; Decrease in the amount of blood that the heart pumps at rest; Less expulsion of air from the lungs than when the organism is younger; Decrease in muscle strength; The excretion of hormones, particularly those of the sex glands and adrenal glands, is lower than normal (VARGAS, 1993, p. 29). These aspects are those that can be verified over time in a phenotypic and genotypic way, since many of these characteristics and physiological events may take longer to appear or not appear, according to each person and how that person has faced the arrival of old age. 2.2.2 From the social framework of aging

OKUMA (1998) has researched the importance of physical activities for the elderly and has found that they greatly contribute to the improvement of their health and quality of life.
According to Hermínio Cavalinho (2013), the gains and benefits of physical activities and exercises for the elderly have significant improvements, but the choice of the type and/or modality of exercise should be made attending to the individualities of each elderly person.
Weightlifting activity is the physical exercise capable of providing muscles with significant effects on muscle structure and gain of strength to the muscles, according to Chagas (2008).
According to Rocha (2013), the elderly practitioner of weightlifting activity will have as a result the benefits of preventing some diseases, improving mobility and body movement, which substantially, will provide quality of life.
The physiological aspect is the most visible factor of aging, and it can be physically evidenced in any elderly individual, according to Vargas (1993).
