The diversity is one of the most fascinating aspects of the living world. In the last 300 years, from exploration trips - the most famous certainly was Darwin's aboard the Beagle - knowledge about the diversity of life has grown exponentially. Fundamental to its consolidation were the theories about the biological definition of species. Although it is not a consensus, since there are currently several definitions for species, the concept proposed by Mayr (1999) is based on three premises, except:
a) The species is a group of individualistic populations that reproduce in different groups. b) The species is a group of individuals that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. c) The species is a group of individuals that share a common gene pool. d) The species is a group of individuals that are reproductively isolated from other groups.
A alternativa que não faz parte das três premissas propostas por Mayr (1999) para a definição biológica de espécies é a alternativa a) "A espécie é um grupo de populações individualistas que se reproduzem em grupos diferentes".
