The scaphoid bone is located in the wrist, in a region called the carpus.
The carpus has 8 bones and is organized into two rows of 4 bones.
The scaphoid bone is the bone of the proximal carpal row that is positioned in the LATERAL region of this row and articulates with the Radius.
The majority of bones receive blood from the arteries in the PROXIMAL to DISTAL direction, that is, from the heart to the organ.
The problem with the scaphoid bone is that when the Radial artery penetrates the carpus, it divides into two branches, one volar (palmar) and the other dorsal.
The dorsal branch is responsible for about 70 to 80% of the vascularization of the scaphoid bone (middle and proximal thirds) and the volar (palmar) branch is responsible for about 20 to 30% of the vascularization of the scaphoid bone (distal and middle thirds).
The fracture of the scaphoid bone represents about 60% of the fractures of the CARPUS, being therefore a relatively common wrist fracture.
When there is a scaphoid fracture, the person feels pain in the anatomical snuffbox during wrist and thumb movement, accompanied by edema in the region and eventually ecchymosis after a few days.
Generally, the scaphoid fracture does not appear on X-rays immediately after the fracture, which can give a false negative of the fracture.
When there is suspicion of a scaphoid fracture, the person should be immobilized with an anteroposterior plaster cast and thumb immobilization. Another X-ray should be taken about 2 weeks after the first one, and if the scaphoid bone is fractured, a fracture line will appear on this second X-ray.
