A hemisection of the spinal cord, also known as Brown-Séquard syndrome, results in the loss of ipsilateral motor function associated with deficits in contralateral thermal and painful sensitivity.
The corticospinal tract is responsible for voluntary motricity, and this type of injury interrupts the flow of motor stimuli from the contralateral cortex side to the lesion, causing spastic paralysis ipsilateral to the lesion.
The gracile and cuneate fasciculi do not cross in their trajectory through the posterior cord, which is responsible for deep sensitivity. As there is no crossing, the section impairs the function of protopathic sensitivity, vibratory and epicritic touch ipsilateral to the lesion.
