1  Código: 26354 - Enunciado: A summary enables students to demonstrate their understanding of a
reading material. Therefore, as an academic genre, that are some characteristics we need to
consider in order to write an eective academic summary. Considering the characteristics of an
academic summary, identify the option that presents a correct airmative about it:
 a) A summary must present the main points of the text being summarized.
 b) A summary must contain the writer’s opinion about the text being summarized.
 c) A good summary needs to have at least four paragraphs besides the conclusion.
 d) A summary, whenever possible, should describe the text with lots of details.
 e) In a summary, we must avoid constructions such as “the author suggests that…”.
Alternativa marcada:
a) A summary must present the main points of the text being summarized.
Justificativa: Right answer:  A summary must present the main points of the text being
summarized. In a summary, the writer needs to shorten the text by deleting all the unimportant
parts of it.   Distractors: A summary must contain the writer’s opinion about the text being
summarized. Wrong. A summary never contains the writer’s opinion about the text being
summarized. A summary, whenever possible, should describe the text with lots of details. Wrong.
In a summary, the writer needs to shorten the text, so unimportant details are deleted. In a
summary, we must avoid constructions such as “the author suggests that…”.  Wrong. In a
summary, we may use constructions such as “the author suggests”, “the author argues” etc. A
good summary needs to have at least four paragraphs besides the conclusion.  Wrong. The
number of paragraphs will vary according to the length of the text and its most important details.

2  Código: 23140 - Enunciado: Read the excerpt and replace the bold word for one that would add a
correct meaning to the paragraph: The environmental consequences of large dams are numerous
and varied, and includes direct impacts to the biological, chemical and physical properties of
rivers and riparian (or "stream-side") environments. The dam wall itself blocks fish migrations,
which in some cases and with some species completely separate spawning habitats from rearing
habitats. The dam also traps sediments, which are critical for maintaining physical processes and
habitats downstream of the dam (include the maintenance of productive deltas, barrier islands,
fertile floodplains and coastal wetlands). In addition to this, experts found that between forty
million and eighty million people have been forced to move from their homes for dams.
 a) Moreover.
 b) Besides.
 c) Because of.
 d) Thus.

c) Because of.
Justificativa: Correct answer: Because of. The transitional word because of is explaining the
reason why people are forced to move their homes.   Distractors: Besides. Incorrect. It is a
transitional word that indicates addition and it is not appropriate to be used in the sentence. In
conclusion. Incorrect. It is used to conclude ideas and not to explain facts. Thus. Incorrect. It is
generally used to conclude ideas and the sentence above needs a dierent kind of transitional
word to complete the idea. Moreover. Incorrect. It indicates addition and the sentence requires a
dierent transitional word to complete the idea.
3  Código: 26525 - Enunciado: It is important that teachers think about the things to be taken into
consideration before selecting a material to use in class or all their eort will be in vain. The
situation described next exemplifies this assertion.Nate is a teacher at a private high school where
students have a high level of English proficiency. He prepared a lesson to develop their writing
skills and selected a basic, one-page curriculum vitae to work with them. Aer ten minutes of
class, however, all students finished their task and started chatting around.Based on the situation
and the applicability of the text genres in class, evaluate the assertions and the relation between
them and check the correct option:I- The text genre selected was not appropriate for the
group.BECAUSEII - The students got frustrated with its high level of complexity and probably gave
up finishing their task.
 a) Assertions I and II are false.
 b) Assertion I is false and II is true.
 c) Assertions I and II are true, and II correctly justifies I.
 d) Assertions I and II are true, but II does not justify I.
 e) Assertion I is true and II is false.
Alternativa marcada:
e) Assertion I is true and II is false.
Justificativa: Right answer: Assertion I is true and II is false.Although the text genre selected was
not appropriate, it happened due to its lack of complexity, not the contrary. The easiness of a task
can also demotivate students, as there is no challenge to be overcome. Distractors:Assertions I and
II are true, and II correctly justifies I. Wrong. Although the text genre selected was not appropriate,
students got frustrated with its low level of complexity and finished their task very fast.Assertions I
and II are true, but II does not justify I. Wrong. Although the text genre selected was not
appropriate, students got frustrated with its low level of complexity and finished their task very
fast.Assertion I is false and II is true. Wrong. Assertion I is true, as the text genre selected was not
appropriate, and assertion II is false because students got frustrated with its low level of
complexity and finished their task very fast.Assertions I and II are false.  Wrong. Although assertion
II is false, assertion I is true, because the text genre selected was not appropriate for the group.

before choosing a text genre to be used in class. Otherwise, instead of being inspiring and eicient,
an activity can end up being very demotivating for the whole group of students.Considering the
context, identify which option presents a text genre that is probably going to be diicult for
a beginning group of 6 graders.

c) Shakespeare’s poems.
Justificativa: Right answer: Shakespeare’s poems.Since the students are beginners,
Shakespeare’s poems can be very complex and demotivating for them. Distractors:Cake and
cookie recipes. Wrong. As they are not so complex, teachers can use cake and cookie recipes with
beginner levels.Newspaper headlines. Wrong. As they are not so complex, teachers can use
newspaper headlines with beginner levels.Short social media posts. Wrong. As they are not so
complex, teachers can use short social media posts with beginner levels.Advertisements in a

5  Código: 26342 - Enunciado: Introduction, development and conclusion are important elements in
the logical sequence of writing organization. Therefore, knowing how to structure these elements
is very important to the clarity of a text.Based on this, read the excerpts next:A. “So, Teaching by
principles is a book that helps teachers to build a repertoire of classroom techniques that are
firmly embedded in well-established principles of second language acquisition. Most of these
principles are treatedcomprehensively in my companion volume, Principles of language learning
and teaching […] However, Teaching by principles can be used eectively without its companion,
since major principles […] are summarized here in the early chapters.”B. “The use of the term
approach in the subtitle of the book signals an important characteristic of current language-
teaching pedagogy. For a significant part of the twentieth century, teacher education programs
were expected to deliver a handful of dierent methods. […] our current foundations of language
teaching are built on numerous principles […] A principled approach to interactive language
pedagogy is one that is built on such principles.”C. “This second edition of Teaching by principles:
an interactive approach to language pedagogy synthesizes that accumulation of knowledge into a
practical, principled approach to teaching English as a second or foreign language. It is a book for
prospective and new teachers who need to learn how to walk into a classroom and eectively
accomplish objectives.”Resource: BROWN, D. H. Teaching by principles: an interactive approach to
language pedagogy. England: Longman, 2015.
Now, according to the introduction, development and conclusion characteristics, organize the text
in a logical order:

 b) B, C, A.
 c) C, A, B.
 d) A, B, C.
 e) A, C, B.
Alternativa marcada:
a) C, B, A.
Justificativa: Right answer: C, B, A.The excerpt C presents the book, showing its objectives, a
characteristic of the introduction, the excerpt B describes the characteristics of a term previously
mentioned, explaining its meaning in a deeper way, a characteristic of the development, and the
excerpt A restates the objective of the book presented, which is a characteristic of the conclusion.

6  Código: 26524 - Enunciado: Before choosing a text genre and preparing an activity to their groups
of students, teachers must consider aspects such as the social context of the students, their age,
proficiency and preferences.Based on it, compare the scenarios and check the option that
identifies the one(s) in which the teacher observed all important aspects that should be
considered before selecting a text genre to be used in class. I – Youssef teaches at an expensive
private school. He has a small group of high school students very proficient in English and most
part of them are trying to decide which career to follow. Today they are going to practice reading
and writing through magazine articles about dierent college fields and careers.II – Monica
teaches at a public school for a big group of 8 graders. They only know the basic of English and
love doing any activity that involves producing something palpable. Today they are going to make
personalized party invitations for the next school event.III – Mrs. Page teaches at a small private
school. She teaches a group of kids that are around 15 years old, love Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato
and Kate Perry, and always ask her an activity with songs. They have an intermediate level of
English. Today they are going to hear an Elvis Presley’s song and then fill the gaps of its lyrics.

7  Código: 26509 - Enunciado: As an English teacher, you can use text genres when teaching writing
to your students. However, there are some considerations you need to make before selecting the
texts or all your work can be ineective.Summarize the four aspects that a teacher must take into
consideration before choosing the text genre to be used with a group of students.
Resposta:
The four aspects a teacher must take into consideration are the social context the students are
placed (such as city, neighbourhood), their age (to select a text genre that is appropriate for their
maturity level), their proficiency level (so as to not select activities that might frustrate them) and
knowing the group well in order to choose the most appropriate text genre.
Justificativa: Expected answer:The answers are personal, so they may vary. The four aspects a
teacher must take into consideration are:1) the social context in which the students are placed
(such as the specificities of city, neighbourhood, school etc.).2) the age of the students (even
excellent text genre activities will, probably, not work if they do not meet the students level of
maturity).3) proficiency (it is important to choose doable activities according to the students'
proficiency or it might frustrate them).4) the group itself (the teacher must know his/her group and
choose texts genres based on the group).

Based on this technique, read the next four paragraphs about the importance of reading and
summarize them using only one sentence for each. Why is reading Important?   1) Books,
magazines and even the internet are great learning tools which require the ability to read and
understand what is read. A person who knows how to read can educate himself/herself in any area
of life he/she is interested in. We live in an age where we overflow with information, but reading is
the main way to take advantage of it.   2) Television and computer games have their place, but they
are non-thinking activities. With reading, people can go anywhere in the world, or even out of it!
We can be from royalty, or adventurers, or animals, or... The possibilities are endless.   3) Good
reading skills improve spelling. As students learn to sound out letters and words, spelling becomes
easier. Also, reading helps to expand the vocabulary. Reading new words puts them in their mind
for later use. Seeing how words are used in dierent contexts can give a better understanding of
the word usage and its definitions rather than just the cold facts of a dictionary.   4) The power of
the ideas communicated through reading is a foundational reason why some governments oppose
free and honest communication. Illiterate people are easier to control and manipulate because
they cannot do their own research and thinking. They must rely on what they are told.
