Simple Tenses; 2. Continuous Tenses / Progressive Tenses; 3. Perfect Tenses / Perfect Simple Tenses; 4. Perfect Continuous Tenses / Perfect Progressive Tenses. É necessário usar vírgula quando iniciar a frase: If he wants to pass, he has to study. If / When you heat ice, it turns to water. (Se / Quando você esquenta gelo, ele vira água.) - Quando a condição significar "caso", usa-se if: If it rains today, I'll stay at home. (NOT When it rains today, ...) Compare: If I see Jim, I'll show him this letter. (Se eu vir / Caso eu veja o Jim, lhe mostrarei a carta.) When I see Jim, I'll show him this letter. Fish die if they stay out of water. If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils. (Se você esquenta(r) a água a 100 graus Celsius, ela ferve.) Metals expand if you heat them. (Metais se expandem se você os esquenta.) Página 17 de 30 If you don't eat for a long time, you become hungry. If you press the button, the machine starts to work. (Se você aperta(r) o botão, a máquina começa a funcionar.) If you touch the car, the alarm goes off. (Se você toca(r) no carro, o alarme dispara.) - Dar uma ordem ou instrução: Please call me if you have any problems. If you need help, talk to the supervisor. ESTRUTURA VERBAL DA FIRST CONDITIONAL: if + simple present + simple future If it doesn't rain, I will go to the beach. (Senão chover, irei para praia.) Página 18 de 30 If I have money, I will buy a car. (Se eu tiver dinheiro, comprarei um carro.) He won't have money to travel if he loses his job. We will travel to USA if we get a visa. If she takes a taxi, she'll get there in time. If it is rainy, I won't go. (Se estiver chuvoso, não irei.) If he leaves work early, he will have time to eat before class. Will you go if it rains? (Você irá se chover?) OBSERVAÇÃO: Na oração com if, não há will: If I am late, I'll phone. (NOT If I will be late, ...) A estrutura é a seguinte: if + simple present + imperativo ou modal Exemplos: Página 19 de 30 If you want to come with us, put on your sweater. If you like pizza, we could make one this evening. Call a doctor if you feel sick. If you can't come, please phone. ESTRUTURA VERBAL DA SECOND CONDITIONAL: if+ simple past + would, could, might, should + infinitivo (sem to) If I won the lottery, I would buy a farm. I'd go to the beach with you if I didn't have to study. If I had a dictionary, I would look these words up. If Maria spoke English better, she could be a bilingual secretary. What would you do if you lost your job? If I had a driver's license, I could go by car. If they studied during their vacation, they might pass the examination. (Se eles estudassem durante as férias, eles poderiam passar na prova.) OBSERVAÇÕES: - Nas orações condicionais, o verbo to be no passado tem a forma were para todas as pessoas. Convém salienter, entretanto, que, na linguagem mais informal, was é aceito em vez de were na 1ª e 3ª pessoas: If he weren't so arrogant, I'd forgive him. If she were angry, she would refuse to speak to you. If I were you, I would accept their offer. (Se eu fosse você, aceitaria a oferta deles.) If my nose were a little shorter, I'd be quite pretty. (Would é mais comum no inglês moderno; é raro o uso de should no inglês americano.): If I knew her name, I should tell you. (Se eu soubesse o nome dela, eu diria a você.) If I married you, we should both be unhappy. ESTRUTURA VERBAL DA THIRD CONDITIONAL: if + past perfect + would have, could have, might have + past participle They wouldn't have missed the opportunity if they had paid attention. If we had stayed at home, we could have seen her son. If he had arrived earlier, he wouldn't have missed the flight. If he had driven more carefully, he could have avoid the accident. They would have found the book if they had looked for it. (Eles teriam encontrado o livro se o tivessem procurado.) If I hadn't said that, he wouldn't have been so angry. If they had studied during their vacation, they might have passed the examination. I would have travelled if I had had money. (Eu teria viajado se tivesse tido dinheiro.) Página 22 de 30 If I had found her address, I would have sent her an invitation. If we invite Jane, she will go. = Jane will go if we invite her. Página 24 de 30 2. O if de uma oração condicional pode ser omitido quando ele for seguido de were ou had. Nesse caso, é preciso fazer a inversão do sujeito com o verbo. If she had arrived in time, she would have seen the film. Had she arrived in time, shewould have seen the film. Tradução das duas orações: Se ela tivesse chegado a tempo, teria visto o filme. If she were my daughter, she wouldn't talk to me like that. Were she my daughter, she wouldn't talk to me like that. Tradução das duas orações: Se ela fosse minha filha, não falaria comigo desta maneira. 3. Usando progressive tense. If it weren't raining now, I would go for a walk. A estrutura é a seguinte: if + simple past + would have / could have / might have + past participle Página 25 de 30 If Rafael spoke Russian, he would have translated the letter for you. If you had taken the course, you would know how to explain the issue. (Se você tivesse feito o curso, saberia como explicar o assunto.) 11- OUTRAS CONJUNÇÕES CONDICIONAIS - Unless (se não, a menos que, a não ser que) pode ser usado em lugar de if not: Bill won't come if you don't invite him. (Bill não virá se você não convidá-lo.) = Bill won't come unless you invite him. I won't watch TV if there isn't something really interesting. = I won't watch TV unless there's something really interesting. - As conjunções as long as e provided that (contanto que, somente se) reforçam a ideia de que a condição deve ser cumprida para que se produza o resultado esperado: Página 26 de 30 You can come to the wedding as long as / provided that you don't wear jeans and a T-shirt. She is eighteen years old, isn't she? A question tag discordará obrigatoriamente da primeira declaração da frase. Quando a primeira for afirmativa, a question tag será negativa, e quando ela for negativa, a question tag será positiva. Observe os exemplos: Greg is very intelligent, isn't he? O Greg é muito inteligente, não é? + - You aren't Brazilian, are you? Você não é brasileiro, é? - + Quando a tag for negativa, será, obrigatoriamente, contraída, ou seja, nunca teremos uma tag como "is not she?", ou "does not he?". Veja os exemplos: Jhon can ride a bike, can't he? (can + not = can't = cannot) Julie is your neighbour, isn't she? Veja os exemplos: Sujeito Auxiliar Verbo Principal Complemento You can drive a car. She doesn't like chocolate . They have done the homework. Exemplos: Auxiliar Sujeito can't you? Does she? haven't they? Interrogativa: Does she work with you? Ela trabalha com você? Tag question: She works with you, doesn't she? Ela trabalha com você, não trabalha? Página 29 de 30 Quando o sujeito de uma tag question no presente for I, o auxiliar não será o am. Esta é uma exceção. O auxiliar utilizado, neste caso, será o are. Veja o exemplo: I am right, aren't I? Eu estou certo, não estou? Os auxiliares que podem formar o tag são: to do, to be, to have, will e modais. Jack and Susie don't like to play soccer, do they? Mary is a great singer, isn't she? You have done you homework, haven't you? Você fez seu tema, não fez? He will come to my birthday party, won't him? I could buy a car, couldn't I? Eu poderia comprar um carro, não poderia? 13- OUTROS CASOS: Quando a primeira frase é imperativa, utilizamos o auxiliar will para que ela fique mais formal: Open the window, will you? Abra a janela, você pode? Para que a frase fique ainda mais formal, utilizamos o would: Close the door, would you? Feche a porta, você poderia? Página 30 de 30 Bring me some water, please? Traga-me um pouco de água, por favor? Stop talking, ok? Let's dance, shall we? You have been studyingall morning, haven't you? Você esteve estudando a manhã inteira, não esteve? Pay attention! Preste atenção! Afirmativa: Bob has a new computer. Bob tem um computador novo. Neste caso, o auxilia será o DOES. Observe: Interrogativa: Does Bob have a new computer? O Bob tem um computador novo? Tag Question: Bob has a new computer, doesn't he?
