G o o d E v e n i n g , Lad ies and G e n t l e m e n ! 
It is m y grea t h o n o r and p leasure to ex tend a w e l c o m e address to all the par t ic ipan ts 
to the 29 th Y a m a d a Confe rence on " D y n a m i c s and M e c h a n i s m s of P h o t o i n d u c e d 
Elec t ron Transfer and Rela ted P h e n o m e n a " . In par t icu lar m y specia l g ra t i tude mus t go 
to t hose w h o t ravel led grea t d i s t ances to here from ove r seas . 
On behal f of the Y a m a d a Sc ience F o u n d a t i o n w e are very happy for be ing pr iv i leged 
to sponso r the presen t conference . 
T h e Y a m a d a Sc ience Founda t ion w a s es tab l i shed in 1977 as a result of the dona t ion 
of the pr iva te ho ld ings of the late Ki ro Y a m a d a w h o w a s the former Pres ident of 
R o h t o Pha rmaceu t i ca l C o m p a n y in Osaka . Mr . Y a m a d a recogn ized that c rea t ive bas ic 
research in Natura l Sc ience is i nd i spensab le for the wel fare and prosper i ty of m a n k i n d . 
In this respec t the founda t ion has been suppor t ing va r ious innova t ive bas ic resea rches , 
ma in ly in phys ics , chemis t ry and b io logy, ass is t ing in ternat ional e x c h a n g e of sc ient is ts 
and also ho ld ing Y a m a d a Confe rences wi th full f inancial suppor t , three or four t imes 
every year recent ly . 
Al l the confe rences held so far have been r eward ing , s t imula t ing and successful . 
Unfor tuna te ly I could not g ive a w e l c o m e address at the o p e n i n g sess ion, the day 
before yes te rday , d u e to an inevi tab le c i r cums tance . T h i s even ing , h o w e v e r , I am very 
happy to b e here wi th all the par t ic ipan ts . 
Incidenta l ly , I have b e e n a phys ica l chemis t in the field of s t ructural chemica l 
t h e r m o d y n a m i c s and have been w o r k i n g on the s tudy of phase t ransi t ion p h e n o m e n a 
in solid w h i c h are main ly caused by the rmal ly induced a tomic and/or mo lecu la r 
r e a r r angemen t s and p roceed w i th m u c h s lower t i m e scales than that of the e lec t ron 
transfer t reated in th is confe rence . A l t h o u g h I am not the special is t in the field of 
subjects d i scussed in the p resen t confe rence , I a m very m u c h conv inced that the 
pho to induced e lec t ron t ransfer p r o b l e m s are o n e of the m o s t fasc ina t ing and frontier 
top ics w h i c h are in terre la t ing phys ic s , chemis t ry and b io logy and are jus t in 
acco rdance wi th the a im of Y a m a d a Confe rence .

I a m told b y Professor M a t a g a that the confe rence has b e e n p r o c e e d i n g in qu i t e an 
ac t ive and marve l l ous fashion u p to now. I do h o p e such a wonder fu l s i tua t ion wil l 
con t inue and all t he par t ic ipan ts wi l l enjoy a fr iendly contac t w i th each o ther and lead 
to the successful final resul t of the conference .
