If You Can’t Master English, Try Globish PARIS — It happens all the time: during an airport delay the man to the left, a Korean perhaps, starts talking to the man opposite, who might be Colombian, and soon they are chatting away in what seems to be English. But the native English speaker sitting between them cannot understand a word. They don’t know it, but the Korean and the Colombian are speaking Globish, the latest addition to the 6,800 languages that are said to be spoken across the world. Not that its inventor, Jean-Paul Nerrière, considers it a proper language. “It is not a language, it is a tool,” he says. “A language is the vehicle of a culture. Globish doesn’t want to be that at all. It is a means of communication.” Nerrière doesn’t see Globish in the same light as utopian efforts such as Kosmos, Volapuk, Novial or staunch Esperanto. Nor should it be confused with barbaric Algol (for Algorithmic language). It is a sort of English lite: a means of simplifying the language and giving it rules so it can be understood by all. His most successful books are Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. The writer is also known for his insights about the political implications of the use of language. His concern over the power of language to shape reality is also reflected in his invention of “Newspeak”, the official language of the imaginary country of Oceania in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. “Newspeak” is a variant of English in which vocabulary is strictly limited by government ordering. The goal is to make it increasingly difficult to express ideas that contradict the official line – with the final aim of making it impossible even to conceive such ideas. A number of words and phrases that Orwell invented in Nineteen Eighty-Four have entered the standard vocabulary, such as “memory hole”, “Big Brother”, “Room 101”, “doublethink”, “thought police” and “newspeak”. Texto I Language carries culture, and culture carries, particularly through orature and literature, the entire body of values by which we come to perceive ourselves and our place in the world. How people perceive themselves affects how they look at their culture, at their politics and at the social production of wealth, at their entire relationship to nature and to other beings. Language is thus inseparable from ourselves as a community of human beings with a specific form and character, a specific history, a specific relationship to the world. The predominant paradigms of analysis of the spread of English around the world have by and large failedto problematize the causes and implications of this spread. The spread of English is taken to be natural, neutral, and benefial. More critical analysis, however, show that English threatens other languages, acts as a gatekeeper to positions of wealth and prestige both within nations and between nations and is the language through which much of the unequal distribution of resources and knowledge operates. Furthermore, its spread has not been the coincidental by-product of changing global relations but rather the deliberate policy of English- speaking countries protecting and promoting their economic and political interests. Being Italian, for me, begins and ends with the fact that I speak and write in the Italian language. Put that way it doesn’t seem like much, but really it’s a lot. A language is a compendium of the history, geography, material and spiritual life, the vices and virtues, not only of those who speak it, but also of those who have spoken it through the centuries.
