Why do you think the changes are taking place?</p><p>How do different people view mental health, e.g. teens, older adults, men, women?</p><p>Have you noticed yourself and people around you using therapy speak? Consider English and your first language. If so, what do you think about the phenomenon?</p><p>ESL Brains</p><p>Q3: If some students have not read the article, ask those who have to briefly explain what therapy speak is: according to the article, it’s ‘the term used for the language previously reserved for the therapy room, that’s seeped into our everyday lives’.</p><p>ESL Brains</p><p>Let’s think!</p><p>ESL Brains</p><p>‹#›</p><p>Choose three examples of therapy speak in the boxes and explain why you think the people might have said them.</p><p>Please respect my boundaries.</p><p>How toxic is that!</p><p>You need to stop gaslighting me.</p><p>Trigger warning!</p><p>I’m the one doing all the emotional labour.</p><p>EXAMPLE</p><p>You’re so codependent.</p><p>The speaker might think that the person they are referring to has an unhealthy attachment to their partner.</p><p>It’s not selfish, it’s self-care.</p><p>He’s full of red flags.</p><p>It’s her defence mechanism.</p><p>ESL Brains</p><p>If you want to make sure students understand the examples, first read the definitions and ask them which terms used in the statements they describe:</p><p>The limit of what someone considers acceptable behaviour (boundaries). A process wherein a person makes someone believe untrue things in order to control them (gaslighting). A term used to indicate a warning or a sign of potential danger, e.g. excessive jealousy in a relationship (red flag). The act of caring for yourself (self-care). A strategy used to protect yourself from unwanted thoughts or feelings (defence mechanism). The process of managing your emotions to fulfil the requirements of a job or the effort of maintaining healthy personal relationships (emotional labour). Causing harm and unhappiness because it uses manipulation, blame-shifting or passive-aggressiveness (toxic). Something that causes a strong emotional reaction in someone because it makes them remember something bad that happened in the past (trigger).</p><p>You can also ask students: Do you think people misuse or overuse the terms? Do you know other terms that could be considered therapy speak? Explain why.</p><p>PROS CONS</p><p>It helps people understand difficult experiences and emotions.</p><p>It enables people to recognize that certain states or behaviours are unhealthy and may require attention or therapy.</p><p>It helps eliminate the stigma around mental health and encourages individuals to seek support when facing difficulties.
