Prepositions
We use the prepositions in, on and at to refer to TIME and PLACE.
TIME
• We use in to refer to TIME in a more general way: years, months, weeks, seasons. 
For example: “when is your birthday?” “In June”.
• We use on when we refer to TIME in a more specific way: days of the week 
(on Monday, on weekend, etc.) and holidays (We’ll meet on Christmas). 
For example: “When is your birthday?” “On June 25th”
• We use at when we want to increase the degree of specificity: hours. 
Example: “What time is your birthday?” “It’s at 5pm”.
PLACE
• We use in to refer to location more broadly (in Imperatriz, in Maranhão, in Brazil, in South 
America etc).
• We use on to refer to more specific locations such as Streets, Avenues (on JK Avenue, on Ceará 
Avenue, etc.), for social networks (on YouTube, on Facebook, on WhatsApp, etc.) and for surface 
location (on the table, on the wall, etc.)
• We use at to be even more specific, such as addresses and places (at Gran Village 1 bloco 9 
apartment 201; at Rasteiríssima (store), at the library, at the gas station, etc.)
